While almost every other midsized SUV had moved to car-based construction, the 4Runner remained an old-school, body-on-frame SUV, which was great for off-roading but not much else. The ride is unsettled and handling is mediocre at best. Limited trim versions have a sport suspension package with somewhat better control, but a stiffer ride. Off-road is where the 4Runner excels.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Accelerates well and steers great"

Rickey W., GA (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Acceleration is vastly improved by installing a higher performance intake system like a K&N cold air intake. Acceleration is also greatly improved bu using premium gas instead of lower octane regular gas as the 4.0 L engine makes 270 hp on regular and 306 hp on 93 octane. Handling is drastically improved by switching the stock rubber sway bar bushings to higher performane urethane bushings."

Anonymous, GA (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"It is a gutless wonder. Under powered 6 cylinder engine that can't make up its mind which gear to be in - especially going up hill."

Anonymous, NV (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Terrible sun visors just junk on a expensive vehicle."

Anonymous, CO (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"The acceleration is normal, no lagging of power."

Ramon O., FL (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Great vehicle! Drives well."

Anonymous, NC (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Not fuel efficient"

Roman D., ON (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"It's not a great off road vehicle compared to our 2004 Toyota. But, it's a great highway car for road trips. It's been to every western state in the last 12 months."

Anonymous, CO (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Very laggy on acceleration. ..limited edition not all that it's cracked up to be."

JAMES W., NV (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Drive by wire system is not calibrated for fun driving, it is calibrated solely for mileage. Performance intake helped some but not enough. Factory tires also calibrated solely for mpg, had to change to much better tires to help handling. Factory shocks also not stiff enough to control body roll."

TRACY H., GA (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Rides rough. Strays on freeways."

Anonymous, MN (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Love driving it. Handles good in the dmow"

JAC C., MI (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"A lot of outside noise. Not as quite as my older 2002. Both are Limiteds"

Anonymous, AZ (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Drives well...I would rate it a 7 on the 1 to 10 scale"

Gayle P., MD (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Feels like it doesn't stop quickly enough. Power is ok but I have not driven with a heavy load."

Anonymous, MI (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Terrific all purpose vehicle that goes anywhere anytime."

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The seats are comfortable but the ride is harsh. It is time for Toyota to abandon the truck chassis for the 4Runner model. Most drivers are not towing or going off-road. Give us some comfort for the dollars spent on this vehicle."

Russell D., LA (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Noise factor.... very loud road noise especially on highway"

Vivian B., FL (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Sits up good and rides nice and comfortable"

Rickey W., GA (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"There are more noises as time goes on."

Anonymous, NC (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Leather seating and limited trim. Comfortable."

Ramon O., FL (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Likewise, the power front passenger seat lack HEIGHT adjustment. It doesn't feel like I am sitting in a HOLE in this seat like it does with the 2014 Avalon, but a power passenger seat should have the same function as the power driver's seat."

Raymond S., TX (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Seats are comfortable for long distance driving, even after years of use."

L E., ON (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"The 4Runner is very comforatable, the seats are very well done, the vehicle handles well with some minor after market upgrades. It is not at all noisy, all in all a very nice vehicle."

Anonymous, GA (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"The ride height is perfect, the seats offer comfy positions, the only thing that they lack is side support on the bottom driver side."

Humberto E., CA (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Not enough head room and seat adjustment options. Overall, I am very satisfied with the vehicle performance, utility and reliability."

EDWARD M., FL (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"This car is a 4Runner Limited, for some stupid reason they removed the driver's seat memory for this car. If we'd have known this we would have kept the 2009 4Runner we had, better car all around."

JOHN W., NC (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Seats have enough controls to make both driver and passenger seats comfortable for both my husband and me. We use this vehicle for long distance travel pulling a small trailer."

L E., ON (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Every time I press the brake pedal, I hear a "swishing" sound. Two different Toyota dealers have told me this is a normal noise for this vehicle, since it doesn't have a brake booster. They said it could not be fixed or eliminated. I now just turn up the radio. This is my third 4-Runner and I expected better from Toyota!"

J G., SC (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Vehicle great for 4 wheel drive needs but feels and handles like a truck...highlander is a much better comfort vehicle"

Gayle P., MD (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"We've driven 4 Runners since they came out - the SUV are always solid and quiet. Rarely do we hear any rattles and if so, they are easily corrected. Seats in front and back are very comfortable, leg room is good."

Diane T., TX (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

What Owners Say

"Very reliable fairly efficient car"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Extremely reliable and rugged vehicle. Acceptable gas mileage for a large SUV. Very comfortable on long trips."

Anonymous, MA (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"I spent $40K for a vehicle I think was worth 35K. The estimated MPG were higher than what I am actually seeing, so I feel a little lied to there. Also the included 2 year maintenance package ran out way before I hit the estimated mileage cap so I didn't get value out of it that I thought I would."

DANIEL S., MD (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"long lasting and maintenance free"

Anonymous, MA (2012 Toyota 4Runner)

"Well made"
