The 4Runner is among the best off-road-ready SUVs in this price range. Despite retaining a body-on-frame construction, the 4Runner rides better than some car-based SUVs. While its cabin is very roomy and quiet, the 4Runner doesn't provide the nimble, carlike handling of car-based models. Still, it is sound and secure. Side- and curtain-airbags are standard.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Steven A., AZ (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Handles competently in nearly every daily driving situation"

Aaron R., IL (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"It's a larger vehicle than I've been use to. However, the 4Runner does not 'feel' like a big vehicle anywhere as much as I thought it would. It feels nimble and responsive while steering. It has some pep to get up and go when needed. The brakes have been 'softer' than what I've been use to in the past, but that just took some adjustment to get use to. Where I become most aware of the size is in lane space/centering, parking lots, turning radius, and/or when backing into the driveway/garage. Again, I believe these are just factors that I need to adjust to. Overall, I'm very happy with the 4Runner."

Dan S., UT (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"My Toyota 4Runner has excellent acceration and handles well around turns."

Michelle X., CO (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

David S., MA (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"This 4Runner was bought brand new in 2008 and has never disappointed. It has the larger powerful V6 engine that was replaced to a less efficient one after 2008. That was a BIG mistake on the part of Toyota. Love, enjoy the ride, car curb appeal and most of all it's reliability ."

Terri M., AB (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"smooth acceleration , powerful engine , a little top heavy on corners , comfortable riding , confident to drive"

WALTER L., NC (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Emergency responses were totally under control which is indicative of excellent steering and stability characteristic. Gas pedal adjustments respond in a quick and smooth response."

PETER M., TX (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"The 4-wheel drive system with only all season tires got me thru snow that was literally over bumper high, down unplowed streets, 24 miles to and from work. I was amazed at the vehicle's ability to handle snow that deep."

KEVIN M., MA (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Seats are a little too hard especially when driving long distances."

Susan A., NV (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"It's just what we wanted, and why we're SO glad we did our homework on Consumers Reports online to discover that the three major re-designs over time had significant impacts on comfort and ride quality, with the most recent one being a step backward. This allowed us to target our shopping/internet searching to the correct year(s) as well as the low mileage and other features we sought. Since I drive a 2007 Toyota Avalon, we're used to its ultra quiet and smooth ride, and my husband wanted a rea..."

Patricia A., FL (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Handles well. Comfortable for me."

Anonymous, CT (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"bench seat, better if bucket seats. bench seat not comfortable for long trip and limits who is driving. Tall person has to drive if the other is short"

Anonymous, VT (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Good ride for a truck!"

Anonymous, HI (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"I travel in the vehicle for often for 3 hours or more per day. The seats are very acceptable. The ride noise is a bit loud, but it is built as a body on frame truck style vehicle so it is somewhat expected. The noise is also somewhat comforting because you can hear when something isn't quite right."

Anonymous, TN (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"It's durible and built to last. No problem pulling trailer pleanty of Power."

Harold B., MS (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Seats are very comfortable and the electric drivers seat adjusts upwards enough for shortest people. Its quiet and handles bumps and ruts very well."

Anonymous, MD (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Ride and excellereation"

Anonymous, NY (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"It is ten years old and still quiet. It rides great. The seats are comfortable for long trips."

David S., CA (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"I wish that the seats were more plush, softer, and more comfortable on longer trips."

Anonymous, TX (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"The comfort and ride for a truck of 10 years old is still good with 200,000 miles on it."

Jeff L., CO (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"seats are extremly durable and easy to clean. Driver seat controls are excellent and overall seat position and comfort are excellent"

David S., MA (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Ride is good. Some road noise."

Hugh E., GA (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"When it rains a lot the front passenger floor gets wet. The lights on in the area of the clock don’t work again"

Joan S., NY (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"I think it is quite good in comfort in those 3 areas. When going long distances I noticed how effortless it was to use compared to compact cars I used to drive. I was less tired after one of those 10 hour drive days I have done before."

Hugh B., UT (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"I would like a telescopic steering wheel and a softer right arm rest."

Anonymous, ME (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"It's a very comfortable ride. It still feels like a 4x4, but the noise is minimal. The ride is smooth compared to other 4x4 vehicles I've driven. The seats are super comfortable; I can drive for hours without becoming uncomfortable."

Dan S., UT (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Driver's seat has excellent inflating lumbar support. Wish passenger side had it too. Seats are very comfortable overall though. Climate control (automatic) is excellent. Noise level is good for an SUV (winter street tires all year). Ride is fine, again for an SUV. Fold-down-flat seats are excellent. It lacks places to put things (Toyota Sienna-like storage would be a dream). Glove box and center console are too small. Cruise Control is excellent. It has those 3 magic words: Made in Japan"

GARY J., CO (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"the ride is quite comfortable and the noise factor is rather good comparatively to other SUVs I have owned"

Anonymous, AB (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Most comfortable truck we have ever owned. Excellent seat support and both driver and passenger seats have electric controls - 6 way I believe. A/C works great after 8 years. Very nice ride - not truck like at all, but doesn't feel spongy like some vehicles."

Anonymous, MD (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"The seat is NOT as comfortable as the Rav 4...I get out of the car after driving for some time and feel cramped and stiff."

RUSSELL D., FL (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"FRONT SEATS ARE A LITTLE TO SMALL."

RICHARD B., WA (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"The smooth ride"

Anonymous, CA (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Noise, is the one area that could be improved, obviously it is a truck, but highway speeds cause you to raise the volume on the radio."

Anonymous, VA (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"For as big as the vehicle is, it really doesn't provide much room or comfort for passengers."

Anonymous, VA (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"The car is comfortable, but there was a recall on the heated seats. There is no fix, but they will issue money to have it disconnected. I called the number, but never received a response. Sometimes they work so I leave it alone."

CHUCK S., NY (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"This vehicle does not have a powered tailgate. Closing the tailgate manually is a chore."

MARK W., TX (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Very comfortable, love the heated seats & climate control system. Very quiet ride, nice to be up higher and confident the vehicle will handle any incliment weather issue"

Anonymous, NV (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Not fancy but very dependable."

Anonymous, TX (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"4 Runner was tops in SUV ratings in 08 which is why we purchased it. It has lived up to all expectations and more. Not one issue outside of regular maintenance. Will buy 4 Runner again."

Michael L., NJ (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Amazing value for this great vehicle. It drives so well even after so many miles, off-road experience, and towing. Continually extend the expected life of this vehicle."

Christopher M., NV (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"No problems."

Anonymous, VA (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Extreme underbody rust. It's like there is no coating to protect frame and parts underneath as well as some engine parts.all are rusting more than they should.looking at this issue on the web it seems to be very common for toyotas dating back to the early 2000's."

Anonymous, NJ (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"The vehicle is ten years old with 115000 miles on it. It has never seen a garage. It has had no mechanical issues of any kind. The reliability of the vehicle cannot be topped."

David S., CA (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"With proper maintenance, it's been a steady trooper. No major issues with the truck from day 1."

Jeff L., CO (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Very reliable and rugged vehicle. Ride is a little rougher than expected, but I guess that is typical for vehicle like this with weight and towing capacity. Standard audio quality is adequate."

E M., TX (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Driven 10 years with no major issues. Remains a comfortable, reliable, attractive vehicle"

Thomas A., TN (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Very reasonable price for a off-road SUV"

"This vehicle starts every day, works on a farm, travels long distances to the city with comfort and reliable performance. Reliable, reliable, reliable."

Robert M., UT (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"The 2008 model has been very reliable."

Terri M., AB (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Good reliable truck.2008 underbody is extremely rusted, seems common for older toyota trucks, making it unsafe as they get above 10 years old."

Anonymous, NJ (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Though I felt the 4Runner was expensive in 2008, in retrospect it has been a perfect performer with virtually no mechanical issues in 10 years of use. I realize that it is still a relatively low-mileage SUV, but it has handled some off reading, trailer towing, and heavy snow conditions extremely well. It's small V8 has been a perfect performer. I would add that my wife feels more safe and secure is this vehicle than any other we have owned."

Martin A., CO (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"It gets used in remote areas that most other vehicles including jeeps get stuck!"

Anonymous, MD (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Great reliable vehicle but there are problems with interior lighting and floor wetness after rain."

Joan S., NY (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"toyota makes a great product"

Anonymous, NJ (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Very good value for mileage, comfort, and reliability"

Anonymous, NV (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Got it in July 2008 when the car lots were very low on inventory due to banking debacle. We paid less for the 4Runner sport edition than we had for our 2001 chev blazer - how's that for a deal! And we would have paid more - its a great vehicle."

Anonymous, MD (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Low maintenance and reliability"

MARTIN A., CO (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Great value anx reliability"

FRANK D., FL (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Paid $5k than list with all the options I wanted. The vehicle has plenty of power and rides reasonably well for a truck based vehicle. Never had a problem with the vehicle, just routine maintenance. Good initial value and great long term value. good initial valve"

WALTER L., NC (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"I bought 6 cylinder to tow a 4000+# Trail Manor (19-26) camper. Vehicle tows very well with strong acceleration, smooth ride & great braking. Gets 16-19 mpg while towing with 3 adults & 2 grandkids in the car."

FRED G., FL (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Great car-good utility durable reliable"

Anonymous, OH (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Reliable vehicle with enough power to tow a 17 1/2 ft. Fishing boat. Looks good an classic"

CARL J., OH (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"For a larger SUV I think the styling is sleek and attractive. It LOOKS like an SUV, not a mini-van or crossover and I like that. It looks capable and rugged but refined and stylish at the same time, tough thing to accomplish."

KEVIN M., MA (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Decent visibility (for an SUV) unlike many others that choose style over practicality. Other than that, it's a truck. Utilitarian. Which is fine."

GARY J., CO (2008 Toyota 4Runner)

"Love everything about it"

Anonymous, CA (2008 Toyota 4Runner)
