While almost every other midsized SUV had moved to car-based construction, the 4Runner remained an old-school, body-on-frame SUV, which was great for off-roading but not much else. The ride is unsettled and handling is mediocre at best. Limited trim versions have a sport suspension package with somewhat better control, but a stiffer ride. Off-road is where the 4Runner excels.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"good handling but poor ride"

Anonymous, TX (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"A BIT SLUGGISH; A BIT TOO MUCH BODY ROLL IN CORNERING"

Harry S., NJ (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"For a heavy mid size SUV acceleration is more than adequate. 5 speed auto could use another gear for better economy. Handling is not a strong suit but this is an off road vehicle and built for durability and strength."

T W., ID (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"nice ride"

H S., MA (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Smooth control and ride."

Donald C., NE (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"An EXCELLENT MACHINE in ALL respects, acceleration, super handling, and VERY SOLIDLY BUILT!"

NATHANIEL H., VT (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Sometimes upon attempting rapid acceleration (on ramp for example) I sometimes experience a lack of response and almost a stalling sensation"

JERRY J., CA (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"The acceleration is a little sluggish. Upon braking the vehicle tends to dip down in front rather than maintaining a relatively level posture upon braking."

Anonymous, SC (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"It is an SUV. Handling and braking are just ok. Rear brakes wore out before the front brakes."

SETH W., AL (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"4 runner handles very well"

SERGIO C., TX (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Handles confidently on or off pavement. Great feel for the road and effective acceleration and braking,"

Anonymous, VA (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"The 4Runner has several different suspension systems and 2 different 4WD systems available. I don't think the reviews adequately take this into account. I have the Trail model and my brother has the Limited, and we have driven each other's cars. The ride is quite different."

Anonymous, CT (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"The V8 engine would have been a nice option to have on this model, but it was discontinued."

KEVIN A., IA (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"This is a real 4-WD vehicle. With 20" wheels I've taken it on some scary places. The bells and whistles are not as good as my friends' less expensive vehicles."

EVELYN H., GA (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Acceleration is very good for a truck based 4WD. Off road driving is superb and crawl control is a huge help on the worst jeep trails."

Thomas W., ID (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"solid ride, great for hauling, comfortable and great style"

Anonymous, WI (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"It handles well in all weather, but the acceleration could be better. Might be setup more for towing though."

Anonymous, CO (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Great masculine looking truck . Feel safe and secure at all times when driving . Absolutely no problems at all what truck . Superstrong Dsix engine bar merging and passing . Macho is the only thing I can say for this SUV"

Roscoe R., IL (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Off road handling stands out with the 4Runner Limited. The All Wheel Drive system is easily changed with a control knob to meet conditions encountered. Engine power of the 4 liter V6 produces good passing power on the secondary roads and better than adequate torque for towing. True it does not handle like a Camry with car like comfort. It was not designed for the Mall. The intent of the design was carrying hunters, fishermen, campers, and explorers across paved roads to unpaved unimproved roads to their destination deep in the woods, desert, or tundra. In those venues it has superlative handling a car could not begin to deliver."

Anonymous, ME (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"value/resale value"

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Great to drive. Beautiful car."

Donald C., NE (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"The engine paired with the 5th gen 4Runner is dated, slow, and could use higher end torque with better gearing. Cruise control shifting is jerky and the engine hunts for gears."

Anonymous, MD (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Had a 2004 4-Runner in the past with a V8 which had far better acceleration. The vehicle seems a bit top heavy in the turns.."

Anonymous, BC (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"The 4Runner gives the feeling of riding in a large SUV with better has mileage. Also it feels safer."

Betty P., MS (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"The vehicle responds well to increased acceleration needs. Good response, smooth. There are no issues with handling."

Anonymous, TX (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"not a very comfortable ride"

Anonymous, TX (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"The AC system doesn't cool as well as I hoped. It seems like the blower doesn't move air very well. I thought the leather seats would be more comfortable than they are."

James M., OH (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Adjustments, lumbar and especially rear seat comfortable. Even third row is better than other vehicles third row."

Bruce C., VA (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"The only real complaint I have about the 4Runner is that on long drives the seats tend to not be very comfortable"

Anonymous, OH (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"The ride is firm with road noise. Off road capability is very good."

ROBERT H., OR (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Seats are comfortable with an upright position. Climate control works very well. It's a quiet vehicle to drive. I would eventually like to replace the shocks and struts with Bilstein OEM replacement shocks and struts for less roll, less dice whole braking."

RONALD R., ND (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Clean layout and comfortable seats"

Anonymous, TX (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"very comfortable on long trips"

Anonymous, NC (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Wind noise/whistling from windshield area when strong winds from side angles sometimes. Also when have cartop carrier on car and driving interstate speed sometimes wind noise from the power sunroof."

Anonymous, TX (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"not the same ride as my 2008 4runner . hear more road noise and choppy ride"

Anonymous, ON (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Very harsh ride over uneven surfaces"

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Driver's seat lacks support - it seems to sag on the right side, very uncomfortable to sit in for extended periods of time. There is a "wind" noise (whistling) at around 60 KM - the dealer believes it is caused by the factory installed roof rack & doesn't have a solution"

Anonymous, BC (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"The ride is smooth, the seats are very comfortable and there is much lower road noise than in another of your vehicles."

Anonymous, TX (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Love this car bullet proof"

Ranjith K., NM (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Would like a smoother ride."

Anonymous, SC (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"The seats could be a little more comfortable. Not too bad though. The ride is good and not too noisy. It could use more headroom in the back seat."

Anonymous, CO (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Seats are not that comfortable on long trips."

Anonymous, OH (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Compared to the newer models I feel that I've gotten a tremendous deal on my Trail model. Today many of the options that I have are extra costs driving the price of a 4Runner as I like it equipped to well over $42 K. Has everything I need and use and not much extra stuff that I do not use."

T W., ID (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"We feel like we got a really good deal when we bought the vehicle new and we know that it's retaining its value"

Anonymous, OH (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Probably one of the best SUVs we've ever owned"

JOSEPH H., VA (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Were able to negotiate a better price, running boards and new tires for our purchase. We bought this car 3 weeks ago. So, take all answers while considering that fact."

Anonymous, UT (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Great vehicle"

David S., KY (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Very satisfied with 4 Runner... no problems, good solid ride"

Anonymous, NC (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Excellent value compared to new models. My Trail has lots of features that were standard and now are options. Very durable and I expect this vehicle to last for several more years."

Thomas W., ID (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Love the style and comfort. A dream to drive"

Donald C., NE (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Great value and solid build quality"

Ranjith K., NM (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"The only negative for this vehicle is the gas mileage. All other variables are excellent."

Anonymous, SC (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"Great value, for a mid size, tows a good load (4800 lbs), returns 22 mpg on many highway runs. All wheel drive system is flawless off road. Covered national park "4wd only" roads in Big Bend National Park with ease. Winter driving is great on un-plowed roads with over 12 inches of snow. To date not a single issue totally reliable. With routine maintenance expect this truck will surpass 350,000 miles with ease."

Anonymous, ME (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

"While o/w a great value, the rear storage is too small due to the deck being too high. In all fairness you did warn me about that in your previous reviews!"

Anonymous, VA (2013 Toyota 4Runner)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"There is very little interior storage room for things like jumper cables, small tools, etc The access to the area behind the second row seats is somewhat inconvienient because the floor height requires lifting of heavy items up onto the floor. This is partially caused because of requirement to get 3rd row seats that must be folded under the floor panel."
