The RAV4 is quite competitive in its class with either the standard four-cylinder or the optional V6 engine. Improvements to the four-cylinder engine for this version of the compact Toyota SUV reduced noise. An available third-row seat and powerful V6 make it a good alternative to some midsized SUVs. The RAV4 is agile and roomy, rides comfortably and has a smooth drivetrain and a flexible interior.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2007 Toyota RAV4 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Alignment

"Rear wheels were out of alignment and to correct I had to spend over $400 for the ability to adjust them (did not come standard on the vehicle)."

"RECALLS"

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota RAV4 Limited 3.5-L V6)

"The car like all 8 of the Japanese cars I've owned has required frequent alignments. Typically, the problems are not serious but more annoyances. The cars do not allow camber and/or caster adjustments and I have had to have cams installed"

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota RAV4 Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Alignment was out enough to require replacement of all four tires, since all wheel drive requires tires be replaced as sets. Not sure if this really is Toyota's policy, or that of the tire companies. I would inquire about this "requirement" before I"

Donald W., WA (2007 Toyota RAV4 Sport 3.5-L V6)
Ball joints

"Replaced ball joints"

Joseph C., CA (2007 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"3 of 4 joint boots have needed replacement in last year"

"At low speed I could feel a "clunk" in the steering linkage when I turned the steering wheel. There are a lot of comments online about this problem, but Toyota does not consider it a safety problem so they won't do a recall. They have issued a TSB to fix it with an improved intermediate shaft. I saw a video on YouTube for adding lubricant to make the clunk stop, so I did it and so far it is working"

Tie rods

"I experienced a subtle juddering or vibration at highway speeds, much stronger around high speed curves. The mechanics could not detect it after the first time they ignored my instructions to take it around a high speed curve. Several months later I took the car in for new tires and asked them to check it again and this time they followed my instructions and experienced the problem as well as noticing the noise from the wheel bearing after the tie rod had been fixed. The morals of the story: A.when somebody has driven a car as far as I have gone in my RAV, he damn well knows when it's making a noise it shouldn't be. They also broke the zipper on my spare tire cover and refused to fix it, and B. I am changing service providers."

Some time after my initial complaint the company came out with a recall/fix for the engine oil leak, but by that time the mileage on my vehicle was past that of the recall criteria. So not able to obtain and covered service under the recall although I believe my issue was part of the same cause as the recall. I had loaned the vehicle to a relative and did not keep up on the oil level as closely as I should because a lack of oil eventually lead to a thrown rod while the relative was driving the car. I did replace the engine and the car continues to run great with the new engine. it is even being used to help another relative with transportation. Just a shame the issue could not have been addressed earlier with the manufacturer and saved me a several thousands dollars."

The extended warranty period was only for 12-18 months, and the dealership had to determine if you met the criteria by doing their own consumption test. Our RAV did not show these problems until 11 months later, and there is absolutely no redress. Currently adding a quart of oil a month between oil changes. Alternator

"This car has gone through seven batteries in its lifetime, and Toyota finally discovered this past year that the alternator was the problem. The first battery was replaced when the car was still new. We have not had any battery problems since the alternator was replaced, and are hoping Toyota was right about the source of the problem. They split the cost of the new alternator with us 50-50 because the problem began when the car was still under warranty"
