An excellent pickup truck, Tundra is comfortable, quiet, handles relatively well and has a super smooth powertrain. It also performs towing and hauling tasks admirably. Good offset-crash-test results are a considerable plus. A crew cab with optional stability control was added to the lineup for the 2004 model year.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

"problems with throttle response"

Ron W., AL (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"It accelerates very well and handles better than most trucks."

Robert H., VA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Transmission has held up even after 180,000 miles. I often use 4 wheel drive"

Anonymous, CT (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Handles very well for a truck."

Anonymous, FL (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Good power, will tow a 4500lb enclosed trailer comfortably on all but the steepest grades. Handling is more car like than truck."

Anonymous, CA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"2003 Great truck, no problems!"

Vickie A., AZ (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"I like the way it drives"

David C., IN (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"It is supercharged so the acceleration is great. I just upgraded the suspension and it drives like a new vehicle again."

Henry K., TX (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Still accelerates as it did in 2003. No 4WD problems. Handles much the same as it always has."

Kurt M., MO (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"It has plenty of power, for towing, or for quick acceleration."

Anonymous, WA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"smooth ride. good value for the price"

Anonymous, KS (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Excellent acceleration with large V-8."

John S., TN (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"For a truck that is 15 years old, the Tundra acceleration and handling are both excellent,"

Donna R., VA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Great acceleration and towing ability. I also use this truck to plow our private road in the Winter. It is extremely durable and realiable"

Michael L., CO (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Great acceleration"

Anonymous, VA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Ride and handling are both good. Acceleration is pretty good for a 6 cylinder."

Anonymous, TN (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"This truck has the TRD suspension which makes the ride a bit stiffer but pays off with the resistance to body roll when driving twisty roads at speed. It certainly is no sports car but for a truck it handles very securely when driven at relatively high speeds. The 4.7 litre V-8 provides fairly spirited acceleration when called upon. It does require more downshifting and higher RPM's than similar vehicles I have driven but it does get the job done quite nicely and the engine sounds very refine..."

Lance N., OR (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"power"

Danny Q., TX (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Even with 121+K miles there is still snappy acceleration and it handles well pulling a trailer or without a trailer."

Thomas G., MT (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"VERY GOOD ACCELERATION HAS THE V8 ENGINE."

Anonymous, UT (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"tHIS TRUCK EXCEEDS ALL EXPECTATIONS IN ACCELERATION, HANDLING AND LOAD CARRYING ABILITY . WOULD LIKE IDEPENDANT AXLES AND REAR DISC BRAKES ."

Anonymous, CT (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"V8 engine with good power and acceleration. Smooth ride and easy handling. Pleasure to drive."

Francis M., PA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"As a 2 wheel drive it goes as well as most 4 wheel drive trucks."

Anonymous, GA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"very firm ride"

Jack M., FL (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"lots of power, VERY COMFORTABLE RIDE,"

Anonymous, CA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Acceleration is excellent and it handles exceptionally well. The turning radius is awesome for this size vehicle. It maintains control in emergency braking conditions and handles very well in wet driving conditions."

Carol O., LA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"good sightlines; excellent acceleration"

Anonymous, OR (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"It is a very well built vehicle"

DAVID C., IN (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Very good comfortable ride for a 4X4 pickup. Very smooth quiet engine."

Anonymous, CA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"great power"

JOHN H., CA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"The V-8 power plant is more than adequate for normal driving and cargo loads. The turning circle is quite large, making it difficult to park head first into perpendicular parking spaces. I usually need to pull in part way, back up for a better angle, then pull in again. It's easier to just back into a space."

Anonymous, CA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Rides rough but accelerates very well"

GREG T., FL (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Everything is a very good truck"

ENGELBERTO H., CA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Very reliable!"

Anonymous, MD (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"It is still extremely tight after all of these years. Has the best brakes of any car that I have driven. Handles extremely well. My only complaint is the poor gas mileage, especially in city driving. I suppose with the V8 engine, and a truck, it was normal. I still like it and should drive it more. ( I have a 1992 Mazda Miata that I also must keep driving)"

Anonymous, LA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"RPM's drop too low before it downshifts,so have to depress accelerator to floor. Then it goes wild with RPM's."

CHARLES K., CA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"With the TRD suspension package the handling is very secure and free of body lean even when driving enthusiastically. The V-8, while smaller than the engines in other trucks, provides very competitive acceleration and very decent mileage even when towing a trailer. My only complaint is I wish it had a 5-speed auto transmission instead of the 4 speed."

LANCE N., OR (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"I test drove the Tacoma. After having a Volvo 740 Turbo (a drunk smashed & totaled it when it was parked) the acceleration was disappointing. I also learned that Tundra was #1 for safety-that made the difference for me. Love my Truck"

MARTHA C., FL (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Very comfortable ride and highway cruising vehicle."

DAVID T., NC (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Excellent off- road vehicle with great creature for 2003"

Anonymous, MD (2003 Toyota Tundra)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Very comfortable ride. Better for a long trip than my Civic."

Anonymous, MD (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"This is an extremely comfortable truck for comfort, low noise, and smooth ride. I wish Toyota still made this size and type of truck."

Jeff M., KS (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Very comfortable ride, feels like riding in a car."

Anonymous, FL (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Rides like a dream on freeways, but very sure-footed and capable off-road. I use for fishing, hunting, and camping as well as for highway trips--it's great for all."

R C., MT (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Noisy."

Anonymous, MT (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Quiet solid ride with good handling."

Anonymous, CA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Great seat comfortable ride for long drives"

Dick J., FL (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"The seats are comfortable and supportive, even for long drives. Road, chassis, and engine noise are fairly quiet. It's a truck, so it rides and handles like one. Though it is much smoother than the 2003 Toyota Tacoma I considered at the time."

Anonymous, CA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"We wish we had bucket seats instead of the standard bench."

Anonymous, WI (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"This vehicle has a very good ride, very little noise in the passenger compartment, and the seats are very comfortable, not just for a pickup but for any vehicle."

Anonymous, WY (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"The only complaint is the mushy brakes. This truck has been amazing."

Carol O., LA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Very comfortable ride for a 4 wheel drive pickup truck."

Anonymous, IN (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"The Toyota Tundra standard can simply has a bench seat with very little back support. If a taller person drives and needs the seat back further, then the passenger has to sit further back. This also leaves little to no room behind the seat for storage."

Steven B., NC (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"We are not fond of the bench seat, but our Tundra is a very reliable vehicle! We bought it new 14 years ago and it still looks well preserved. We hope it lasts another 5 years!"

Anonymous, WI (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Best Tundra Toyota ever built. Great styling, reliability, and size"

Dick J., FL (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"FOR A TRUCK IT HAS AN EXCELLENT RIDE. VERY COMFORTABLE. VERY LITTLE NOISE."

Anonymous, UT (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Very comfortable for long trips and quiet."

Anonymous, OR (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"the tundra is a truck, it rides and drives like a truck but it hauls everything I want it to do. it is exactly what I bought it for."

David S., MN (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"The 2003 Tundra as a V-6 was the perfect size truck. It needed a little more power and got it in subsequent years. I would buy another one if I ever wear this one out."

Anonymous, GA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"The Tundra has always been relatively quiet and rides better than many others of its generation of trucks."

Robert H., VA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Comfortable ride"

CHARLES N., TN (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"The seats are very comfortable, climate control works well, road noise is minimal, and ride is smooth."

NANCY H., CA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"We have the base model with a bench seat. I wish there was a split seat option in the base model."

Anonymous, WI (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Nice. Very comfortable"

Anonymous, CA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"The ride is somewhat harsh.Unlike how my 2002 Sequoia rides. It is very comfortable."

LINDA-MICHAEL B., AZ (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"You don't feel that your driving a truck, but more like a comfortable SUV."

NANCY D., NY (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"wish we had got seats that had more room in back"

Anonymous, WA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"seats are ok not real supportive. with age having more rattles.turning radius always has been bad."

Anonymous, NC (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Not enough leg room for tall man or woman in passenger seat or back seat. had problems with radio after purchase. taken in twice. was fixed. works great. cassette player died 2013 CD player still going strong. The AC Rocks! cold in seconds, heater great! purchased seat covers in matching fabric at purchase and so far the cloth covers and upholstery great even though in sun all day! Paint still looks great! This truck has carried everything including massive concrete and sand to x-mas trees. Its"

STACY G., CA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"The seat belts have had known issue with retracting after you unbuckle."

STUART K., FL (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Very comfortable ride and right sixe for me"

What Owners Say

"Aside from a couple of recalls and a strut breaking (due to operator error) this truck has been bullet-proof. Original brakes, light bulbs, exhaust system, paint, etc. Only minor rust on the roof and this truck lives in snow/salt country."

Robert H., CA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"New Tundras cost twice as much, get only slightly better mileage, but they can offer superior safety and electronics."

R C., MT (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"This truck is bullet proof. It has enough features for what I need or want. I have no desire to get one of the new huge tarted up trucks offered today,"

Robert H., VA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Tundra has been fantastic , trouble free, serviced as recommended and dealer is great"

Roy S., CA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"We bought this truck 15 years ago, and it has been very reliable with no major issues. Great value!"

Anonymous, WI (2003 Toyota Tundra)

Anonymous, MA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"handles well in all types of conditions"

Anonymous, KS (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Good trade value on older Tundra plus fair purchase price. Great vehicle for on and off road hunter and fisherman. No real maintenance issues and Toyota paid for air bags and frame rusting issues under recall. They keep wanting my vehicle and I might just upgrade for new features...navigation system."

David W., NJ (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Outstanding reliable vehicle. Worth ever penny."

Anonymous, MD (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Well worth the money spent. Only recommended maintenance done."

Kurt M., MO (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Best tuck made for off-road and rough use!"

Anonymous, MD (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"I haven't had any serious mechanical issues at all!"

Anonymous, CO (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"excellent value---for hauling, taking dogs in cab easy to drive not good for gas mileage"

Anonymous, WY (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"The 6 cylinder engine has plenty of power for my needs, and it's fairly easy on gas. The bench seat suprisingly provides good lumbar support on long trips, but I wished I had gotten cruise control. Staying with the standard cab saved me a 5 grand jump in price. I got the long bed, and I can haul most anything. Good all around utility vehicle that does what a pick-up is supposed to do - haul things."

Anonymous, TN (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"good handling. good trailering. just the basics"

Anonymous, CA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"This particular truck cost me about $23,000 new and has all the features I need or want. A bargain for a utility vehicle. Maintenance costs have been minimal, just periodic fluid and filter changes that I can do myself, tire rotation, even the spark plugs are easy to change."

Linda K., CA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"We purchased our Tundra at the end of the model year and got an awesome deal. We bought the base model and it was actually cheaper than a compact car. I don't believe that is possible now."

Anonymous, WI (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Very good value for money spent. best pickup truck I have ever owned."

Anonymous, IN (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"It's 14 years old, doesn't use a drop of oil, oil change and filter were only maintenance costs last year."

John S., TN (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"The truck has been bullet-proof. I have had to replace the oxygen sensors. The current trucks are loaded down with excess luxury features."

Robert H., VA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Its overall size. The bed is wide enough to carry sheets of plywood lying flat. It is as reliable as any other Toyota product."

Michael T., VT (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Wonderful value!! I've had very few problems with my truck and have driven it in all kinds of conditions (heat, snow, over mountain passes) for many miles. It has been trusty, reliable, comfortable. Feels like an old friend!"

Kelly A., NM (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Most reliable vehicle owned in last 50 years"

Anonymous, VA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"This vehicle is a rust bucket. It is at the dealer today, again, due to major rust problems. Especially rust thru on the frame. I am aware there is a factory program to address the frame rust, but Toyota is trying to exclude my vehicle."

Thomas B., MD (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"get one"

FLOYD J., WA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"I would buy this truck again."

JOHN M., CA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Very reliable"

CHARLES N., TN (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Still running like new"

ENGELBERTO H., CA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Very reliable for its age. I drove for 5 years. 40-50,000 miles per year, 1/2 on logging roads. These last 3-4 years, I've put 1,500-2,000 per year for Maint and repairs, but it's much less than buying something new and making loan payments. Nearly 250,000 miles now."

Anonymous, WA (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Initial cost was high. I have 175000 miles. So I definitely got my money back"

Anonymous, CT (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Extremely low maintenance costs"

GREG T., FL (2003 Toyota Tundra)

Anonymous, WV (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Considering the mileage on this truck, I couldn't be happier with the reliability or cost of ownership."

ELAN B., AL (2003 Toyota Tundra)

"Affordable used truck that should stay running without expensive repairs for as little as I use it - 3rd vehicle for me."

"Truck 13 years old have not had any issues. Still runs well over 200k miles!"

Anonymous, MD (2003 Toyota Tundra)
