This generation of the Tundra was bulked up to take on Detroit's full-sized workhorses. Growing dramatically in size, but losing much of the refinement of the previous model, the Tundra, once considered the Camry of pickups -- fully-modern and easy to live with -- became one of the least refined and most dated. Shortcomings abound. Among them, the Tundra's ride is jittery, especially with the TRD off-road package.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"This truck has outstanding acceleration and handling on the highway."

Anonymous, BC (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Good acceleration, back camera very useful."

Anonymous, QC (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"with the 5.7 L you have plenty of power for towing and the truck handles the corners with good stability"

Will E., IL (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Quick off the line. Corners very well for a large pickup"

Ron M., AB (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Very good for big truck."

Anonymous, NC (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"driving experience is good for comfort. control, Acceleration from dead stop is a concern because of sudden, almost uncontrolled surge in acceleration that feels unsafe."

Anonymous, TX (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Excellent acceleration and handling, Needs 4X4 in some rain to keep tires from spinning when needing a fast acceleration from a stop"

Anonymous, VA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Good acceleration even pulling a trailer, good road handling, average mileage."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Acceleration and handling are great. The truck responds very well in both areas."

Derek W., MA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"The 4.7 V8 does everything I need it to including towing a boat while getting 15 mpg."

Wesley P., MN (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"The vehicle has a factory towing package and a different gear ratio than standard Tundras so it accelerates very quickly. it handles smoothly considering the size and acceleration."

Anonymous, NE (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"With the 5.7 liter engine this truck is a BEAST! Best load toting/hauler I've ever owned. Sacrifice mpgs of course."

Jim R., GA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Excellent power and acceleration."

Anonymous, WY (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Great acceleration & handling"

Kathleen W., OR (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Acceleration is quick and smooth. It handles well on dry pavement and on snowy and wet roads. However, on washboard roads it bounces. But I love my Tundra and will buy another when this one wears out. At my age 77 I doubt it will wear out before I do."

Anonymous, MN (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Nimble and fast, plenty of torque for towing"

Edwin V., CT (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"my toyota has great acceleration and can pull my 7000 pound trailer easily. it has comfortable seating and is quiet. it handles well for a big pickup truck and stopping is adequate. a bit jittery on rough roads. interior room is great"

Will E., IL (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Pulls our trailer without any hesitation. Rides almost like a sedan"

Wesley J., MT (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"It has the same displacement engine as my previous Chevrolet, but the engine is much more powerful when towing our boat with a cab full of people. It’s crew cab also has much more room than my previous Chevrolet. No regrets from trading up and none of the small things breaking and failing as with our last truck."

Dan F., TX (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Acceleration is excellent, steering is quick and somewhat sensitive. Road feel is minimal which I like. Great visibility but this is a big truck and you need to get used to figuring out where the body edges are located."

Charles B., IN (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"We pull a 30 ft camper with the truck which has adaquate acceleration with the acceleration and ease of handling when towing, even on mountainous roads."

Joanne E., MN (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"The acceleration is memorable for a stock vehicle. The transmission helps in making it possible, but is incredibly smooth when not being pushed. Best of both worlds."

Richard B., CA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Very good acceleration and braking. Safety systems, stability and traction control, work well."

Anonymous, AR (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"This truck is no slouch in handling the road. If you stomp on it (such as a short merger ramp to the expressway), she out-performs your expectations. The ride and response are impressive - yes, it is a truck, but I am comfortable on 13-hour, 850 mile trips from Arizona to San Antonio, TX. When towing, there is only a little change in its performance. The truck gives the driver confidence in handling all road conditions and when towing. When not towing, it will corner like it is on rails and is a thrill to drive."

Jacqueline T., AZ (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"More than adequate acceleration."

William B., PA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Very smoothe"

J O., VA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"It has always driven fine."

KAREN B., KY (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"lots of power and ease of handling"

JERRY B., TX (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"bought it new, and it has continued to be a great truck"

Anonymous, GA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Front end is a little "spongy" feels like it could have better turn in, in corners. (realizing it is a truck, it could be better)"

OYSTEIN P., FL (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Gas hog."

Anonymous, CO (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"I had a small truck prior to this one and pulling my bass boat was more difficult. Now, I hardly notice that I'm pulling it since the Tundra is heavier and more powerful."

PRESTON H., TN (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Starting from a stopped position the accelerator is very sensitive. When pressure is first applied, nothing happens. When slight additional pressure is applied the vehicle leaps forward...not like any other vehicle I have ever owned. I have taken it in twice to the dealer and have been told this is normal if the truck has no load. My response was, "So, I suppose the fix is to drive it around with a 1000 pound load all the time.""

DON T., GA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"When first starting the engine seems to race for a few minutes. On the positive side it is wonderful to drive in every way including noise level & overall comfort. It has plenty of power."

CLARENCE W., ID (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"I have experienced an annoying high idle when A/C compressor kicks on and also a very touchy throttle. Neither of these problems were corrected. The dealer stated it would "take a model change". Other than that it has been very good vehicle."

Anonymous, FL (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"the accelerator is "jumpy" at very slow speeds - when crawling along it is not smooth"

STANSEL H., AR (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Awesome power and acceleration, great engine sounds."

SETH B., MO (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"We use this truck in the mountains of Colorado and are often off road - great clearance, nice 4x4 control, good power when towing, even at altitude. Feel safe and confident driving this truck."

Anonymous, CO (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"The cruise control causes the truck to immediately drop down a couple of gears and growl as it accelerates rapidly. They say it is normal. Truck rides rough but is quiet."

DAN F., TX (2011 Toyota Tundra)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Lots of room in both front and rear seats"

Dennis F., ID (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Ride is a little stiff. Drink holders are a bit of a reach from drivers seat"

Anonymous, LA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Like the high ride. Seats are reasonably comfortable. Lots of options with power seat controls. Ride is a little rough. Road noise is okay."

Jerry P., CA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Very comfortable ride. Quiet."

Anonymous, NC (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Seats 6 with plenty of leg room in both rows with the crew Max can."

Anonymous, WA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"The seats are uncomfortable for a short person and on long trips they are not comfortable for any driver."

Anonymous, MT (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Very comfortable seats on long trips, very quiet ride for a truck"

Anonymous, VA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Plenty of room in the cap for passengers. The middle seat for the third person lacks some leg room but not horrible and is not a seat we use often but it is great to have when needed. When that middle seat is not being used, the console is great with 4 cup holders, lots of storage room, and high enough to be an arm rest. Very quiet for a truck and you can ride camp roads without feeling like you have been tossed all over the vehicle from the bumps."

Anonymous, ME (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"The cruise control is way too sensitive and cannot be set differently by the dealer. It will rapidly accelerate on the lowest of slopes. The truck rides rough as well."

Dan F., TX (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"For a big pickup truck the seats and ride and lack of wind and road noise are excellent."

Charles L., ME (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Seats are a bit too firm for me."

Jim R., GA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"The ride in a Tundra is comfortable, quiet, and dependable. This is my fourth one."

Richard B., CA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"For a truck, the seats are very comfortable, the noise is minimal, better than many cars, and it rides very smoothly for a truck, somewhat choppy on bad roads but no rattles or Thurs or vibrations."

Charles B., IN (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Cabin noise is a bit louder then it should be. Road noise is loud at slower speeds. Ride is really comfortable for a true four wheel drive truck."

Michael C., KY (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Our 2006 Tundra had arm rests and the bucket seats were much more comfprtable. The 2012 seats do not fit well for short people."

Anonymous, MT (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Ride is somewhat rough. More road noise than I would wish for. Seats lack good lumbar support."

Anonymous, UT (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"As quiet and comfortable as our Camry and we like the Camry a lot!"

Wesley P., MN (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"The drivers seat is moteried which gives me the options to make the seat very comfortable"

Joanne E., MN (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"All around great truck to ride. Comfortable seats aswell"

Anonymous, NL (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"It’s a truck which rides like a car! We make a 300 mile trip with some frequency and my wife likes the extra room!"

David M., PA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"This is a large comfortable family truck. We truly enjoy it’s ride and room. We use this vehicle primarily to tow our boat to the lake and on weekends. It does what it’s designed for very well."

Dan F., TX (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Seats are not very comfortable, the noise is very low (good) and the ride is way too stiff. The highway ride is great but back roads are tough. You feel like you are slamming into every bump."

Derek W., MA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Seats are a nice size and very comfortable. Ride is very comfortable and quiet, making it great for long road trips."

Donna N., CT (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Just outside the warranty period, with only about 7000 miles, the air conditioning went out. Over $5000 to repair. And we live in Seattle, it isn't like we run the air conditioning all year!"

Anonymous, WA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"The drivers seat foam has broken down and makes it uncomfortable on long trips."

Anonymous, TX (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Extremely comfortable ride; even on extended (all day driving) trips. Very low noise level and very even ride."

MARION K., NY (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"My wife is short and finds it difficult to find a comfortable seating in the passenger seat."

Anonymous, MT (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Radio is a 1-cd unit so a hassle to swap discs."

ROBERT N., OH (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"The truck is designed for taller individuals and is difficult to adjust for a smaller person."

KIMBERLY W., OR (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Love the auto rear window and the lumbar support."

Anonymous, TX (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Truck is not a quiet ride. Body integrity is tight however. Rides better with some weight in the truck. Of course this would make sense given a 4X4. Very good leg room both front and rear."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Seats"

Anonymous, FL (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Right from day one the interior of the truck had a strong smell. I thought it would fade. It was never the nice new car smell. The smell has not faded. It kind of smells like acidic dill pickle chips. I wish I had picked another truck off the lot because they could not fix the smell."

KEVIN T., BC (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"very stiff suspension"

NICHOLAS C., NH (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Ride is a little stiff"

PETER L., NH (2011 Toyota Tundra)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"We use the Tundra mainly to pull a travel trailer. It does the job as well as a much more expensive truck. Plenty of power."

Anonymous, MT (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Towing capacities, I got a VR trailer."

Anonymous, QC (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Tough, dependable truck loaded with features and I feel very safe driving"

Stephen R., FL (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"My Tundra was well priced and it has delivered worry free ownership. I never worry about it breaking down and it has handled with ease all the hard jobs I have thrown at it."

Anonymous, BC (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"I bought this vehicle new in Jan 2012, and I have had ZERO problems with it. The cost of dealer-maintenance is extraordinarily low, for an over-all cost of ownership practically nothing. I use it to tow my travel trailer, and while I do not like the 9 mpg, it is comparable to other tow vehicles. It has been a splendid workhorse, and does not slow down under tow. Some people opine that the Toyota Tundra is expensive, but having experienced ZERO problems in 6-1/2 years, makes it worth every penny. The built-in navigation system is worth its weight in gold, and I don't have to fuss with it once an address is entered. I am very happy with everything this Tundra provides for the money spent."

Jacqueline T., AZ (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Nice vehicle for the price. When others were asking $45,000 for a pickup, I got this Tundra for $32K. Plenty of power, nice ride, comfortable, but not quite the mileage they advertised. Had to have steering replaced right after warranty period expired. Otherwise, no problems."

Anonymous, WA (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Great truck. I’m pleased with overall looks & performance."

Bob C., AR (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Equipment level is much better than any competitor."

Anonymous, WY (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Good performance and solid, trouble-free ownership."

Anonymous, NC (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"I negotiated price with the samesman and paid what I believe was a fair price. I wanted a reliable pickup with an eight foot bed and Toyota fit my requirements. It also easily pulls my three hourse slant trailer."

Anonymous, MN (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Only vehicle I will let my husband buy. He is hard on vehicles & toyota is the only vehicle that will last"

Kathleen W., OR (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Outstanding"

DAVID S., FL (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"My husband continues to have no problems with his 2011 Tundra. We have had other Toyota vehicles, and do not expect to have issues in the future with it. And if there is, we have faith in Toyota."

KAREN B., KY (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"Best truck for the best price. What more can you say."

Anonymous, TX (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"This truck rides great. Better than many cars. It has held it value well above other trucks. On big factor is its dependablity."

Anonymous, NJ (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"The Tundra smartphone and bluetooth/audio interoperability is terrible."

Anonymous, NC (2011 Toyota Tundra)

"I had definite ideas of what I wanted in my truck. My dealer searched State-wide to find a truck with my features. She also obtained zero-percent interest for me. The vehicle has had zero problems and is a joy to drive. It is 100% dealer maintained and the costs are very inexpensive."
