This generation of the Tundra was bulked up to take on Detroit's full-sized workhorses. Growing dramatically in size, but losing much of the refinement of the previous model, the Tundra, once considered the Camry of pickups -- fully-modern and easy to live with -- became one of the least refined and most dated. Shortcomings abound. Among them, the Tundra's ride is jittery, especially with the TRD off-road package.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Powerful acceleration, but you pay for it with poor gas millage."

Kurt Z., NH (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"handles well in all kinds of weather"

Anonymous, OK (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Small 8 cylinder engine uses too much gas."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Love this truck. Best of all I owned. Very user friendly. Comfortable, and handles like a car. Gas mileage could be better."

Anonymous, PA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Nimble for a big truck. Better in parking lots than my previous 4WD trucks. Very reliable and well built vehicle. Have had an intermittent vibration that only occurs every 4 mos but is a bit worrisome. Bought the truck off lease so some uncertainty on treatment from previous business owner."

Anonymous, ON (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"I purchased the 4.6 L engine with my Tundra and have found the acceleration very surprising in everyday driving. On the other hand I would recommend the larger engine if you tow frequently in mountainous areas - the 4.6 lacks the torque you'll need."

Anonymous, MA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"accellerater is very sensitive to pressure and will lure from stop sign if pressed just a little."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Great acceleration, good handling. Best light truck available for pulling horse trailers."

Anonymous, IL (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Handles well, v8 power, solid in every way"

David J., CA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"just a pleasure to drive, feels like your in a car"

Anonymous, CT (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Excellent acceleration from the 5.7 liter engine. With the TRD package, the ride can be stiff on-road."

Jeff W., MD (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Lots of power towing a trailer or with a full bed. Barely notice the weight."

Edward F., PA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"It drives a bit rough, I know this is because it is a 4x4, but the difference between it and a 2 wheel drive is significant."

Anonymous, GA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Powerful moderate towing. Pleased with off road 4WD during hunting season."

Raymond S., NM (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Smooth handling and comfortable ride."

Anonymous, MA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"very ruff riding and noises"

Anonymous, MD (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Negative: too much tip in of the accelerator pedal when starting from a stop. Definitely gives impression of power, but I prefer a smoother launch from stop,. Positive: This is my go to vehicle for long trips, even over my 2017 Subaru. Around town it is just plain big and bulky, and gets less than good mileage. It's a big pickup truck. I like it better than my friend's F150. It's a keeper. Enough said"

Anonymous, NY (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"It handles great and accelerates with authority"

CHRIS W., GA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Good: great view of the road, easy to steer and drive, roomy, responsive brakes Bad: ride is firm like a real work truck"

DAVID J., CA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"The handling is sportier and the ride is quieter than other domestic manufactuers"

EVAN H., AB (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"This truck runs as well as any high performance car I have owned in the past. It does everything I ask when needing to pass or maneuver. If I'm not careful it will turn over the tires when accelerating from a stoplight!"

RICHARD P., VA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Accelerates very lively, very good MPG considering. About 16 stop and go. About 18 highway."

DON J., AL (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"MEGA power and acceleration from the Iforce 5.7L engine. Tows trailer like it is not their. Fuel economy is not great compared to similar trucks, but my resale value will be much better due to the excellent reliability of the Toyota"

B K., SK (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Cruise control downshifts too often too quickly."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"This is a huge vehicle. I love it, but the 4.6 L V8 is adequate for city driving, maybe not a work truck. The Tundra is a great vehicle but 4.6 engine is for city, urban driving and light loads."

LEE G., GA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Great acceleration and torque"

Anonymous, AL (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Accelerator pedal is very sensitive on start out causing a jerking start unless very careful. Has very good acceleration and handling. Ride is normal for a 4x 4 truck."

JACK T., NC (2012 Toyota Tundra)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Does the job for a truck. Comfortable seats."

Edward F., PA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

Anonymous, MA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"COMFORTABLE SEATS, RIDES LIKE A LARGE SEDAN"

Walter H., IA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Excessive engine noise at low speeds and truck generally has a very stiff and punishing ride."

Anonymous, IA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"seats are comfortable and practical"

Anonymous, OK (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"The passenger seat does not have the same adjustments that the driver seat has."

Dawn B., NY (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Lots noise from the dash area"

Anonymous, TN (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"The seating is very comfortable front and back with plenty of legroom."

WARDEN R., TN (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Quiet, comfortable ride. Very little road noise. Heating and cooling are excellent."

Anonymous, WA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Driver door arm rest is approx 2 inches lower than consol. Makes it awkward to use both at same time when whth both hands on wheel, one elbow is 2 inches lower than other."

D D., WV (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"My Tundra has the SR5 features and a few other accessories. Even at this trim level it does not come with automatic headlights. This should be standard with the SR5 trim level."

WILLIAM B., VA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"It is as comfortable to drive as any car. I love to take it on trips and would do so more often if the gas mileage was a little better (I get 19 mpg highway but my other vehicle gets 24)."

RICHARD P., VA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"I have the Crewmax cab and people want to ride in the back seat because there is more room"

Anonymous, OH (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"This Tundra is a TRD model with towing package. As a result, the ride has suffered. Depending on road conditions, we can experience moderate to severe bed bounce. If I were to have the choice again, I would not choose to include the TRD option."

WARREN S., IA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Purchased leather seats with vehicle and, after 3 years, the tanning was diminished on the perforated leather. Very disappointed."

JIM F., FL (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"drink holder location is poor for the driver. Why can I only display one of the following at a time. I want to see them all, All the time, "temp. gas mpg, gas avg.mpg, miles left to drive on tank of gas."

Anonymous, MI (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Ride is hard"

Anonymous, NY (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"On the drivers side seat you can feeel the springs."

CHARLES G., IN (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"My 2012 Toyota Tundra is very comfortable to drive like you are sitting in a la z boy chair especially after driving 2 or more hours I feel rested when I get out. My air conditioning works great and keeps the cabin at a comfortable temperature."

JOSEPH F., NB (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Love the heated/Air Conditioned leather seats in my Platinum Edition"

B K., SK (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Ride is not quite smooth. Can't turn Navigation voice down or off until destination is reached. Back up camera angle in dash has glare in daytime. Temperature and Clock too recessed into center of dash to see at a glance from either driver's or passenger's seats."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"I have a trd 4 x4 love my truck But the ride is a little ruff , my next tundra woun,t be a Trd."

Anonymous, KS (2012 Toyota Tundra)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Reliability, excellent performance and handling. Poor gas mileage."

John J., KY (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Great deal for this much truck, GM and Ford are crazy charging what they do"

David J., CA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"We own a travel trailer so needed a truck with the power of the Tundra. The Tundra's comfort is equal to any regular car we have driven. For it's size (we have the longer bed) it still maneuver's pretty well and is easy to drive. The seats are very comfortable and the ride is very quiet."

Rita R., CA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"I've driven it on 2 10,000 mile trips pulling a 37 foot travel trailer. I use on our Outer Banks sand beaches. It lives in a very salty environment. I love it!"

Anonymous, NC (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Excellent operating system."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Sturdy, hard-working truck. I'll never sell this truck."

WARDEN R., TN (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Resale value is much higher than for other manufacturers. Reliability is much better too."

EVAN H., AB (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Best value I've ever gotten in any vehicle (I've purchased over 40 vehicles in my life). Totally reliable, comfortable, for a cost far less than other trucks and the bonus is that it retains its value better than most other vehicles."

Anonymous, VA (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"My main concern is the lower then advertised gas mileage performance, 17 MPG, and the weakness of the rear bumper. A bumper should be a bumper, not something that you can straighten out by hand!!!"

Anonymous, TX (2012 Toyota Tundra)

"Bought through CR Buying service at 20% off MSRP. Very satisfied!"

W P., AL (2012 Toyota Tundra)
