This is the month to shop for gas grills, kitchen and laundry appliances, and more

Thanks largely to the July Fourth weekend sales, this month always kicks off with discounts on everything from large appliances to grills to mattresses and more. It can be a great time to shop for both big-ticket items and smaller ones, such as microwaves and dehumidifiers, especially since sales often continue past the holiday weekend.
This year, though, sales on other items may be a little scarce. Amazon Prime Day came early, running from June 23 to 26, and all those Black Friday-in-July sales meant to compete with it happened in June this year, too. That said, if you’ve got school-aged children or your kids are heading off to college in a couple of months, back-to-school sales do begin in July, often as early as the middle of the month. Look for discounts on dorm essentials and tech.
In addition to these sales, a handful of product categories typically drop in price this month. Consumer Reports tracks the prices of every product we test all year to help you know when you can expect the biggest discounts. We expect plenty of opportunities to save on those products this month.

Grills
Thanks to July Fourth sales, you can usually find loads of discounts on gas and charcoal grills. The deals often last throughout the month. But this year, similar to 2025, we’ve seen fewer discounts on grills, so if you see a good price, we recommend acting fast before it’s gone.
Prices can range from as little as $100 to more than $3,000, depending on what you want. CR tests grills to fit every cooking style and budget, from portable models you can take camping to larger grills designed to feed an extended family. We produce ratings of nearly 200 grills to suit first-time buyers and seasoned grill masters searching for a replacement or an upgrade.
There are three main types of grills to choose from, and each has pros and cons when it comes to cost, ease of use, cleanup, and, most importantly, how it cooks food. So you’ll want to review our grill buying guide if you’re not sure whether you’d be happiest with a charcoal grill, gas grill, or pellet grill.
Weber is best known for its iconic kettle charcoal grill, but this flat-top grill is worth a serious look. It earns a spot near the top of our ratings for its even heating and broad temperature range. It’s definitely a step up from the lower-priced Blackstone—it features three burners instead of two, a second side shelf, and a lid. It also has some stainless steel accents. While the Blackstone is a great option for no-frills cooking or for a camping trip, the Weber is probably the model you’d want to display on your deck.
The Coleman RoadTrip 285 has everything you need (sans propane) for an all-in-one grilling experience,, no matter where you are. Even better, it’s $60 less than its Memorial Day price. This toteable gas grill’s integrated stand folds up like an ironing board with wheels, so you can roll it to your ideal cooking location with ease. There are also collapsible side tables to keep tools and condiments within reach. All these factors add to its unbeatable convenience. As for grill performance, it heats evenly enough in CR tests for a competent cooking experience, and with three burners (20,000 BTU overall), you can dial in the perfect temperature with more than acceptable accuracy.
The Kamado Joe Classic is on sale for the first time in well over a year, and Amazon and Ace Hardware both dropped their prices by over $100, making this an opportune time to hit that buy button. It’s our top-rated ceramic kamado and comes packed with features, including a few that make it a stellar smoker. It has an elevated rack and comes with a heat deflector for smoking meats, both of which allow you to easily slow-cook, say, a brisket, without drying it out. It also has adjustable dampers and a locking lid, which help control the flow of air so that you can maintain a low and slow smoke for hours on end. It excelled at slow-cooking a pork shoulder in our tests, as well as at cooking a thin-crust pizza over high heat, helping it earn a rating of Excellent for cooking performance.
This high-end midsized Fuego F27S grill hits almost every mark. It rates very good at producing even heat, preheating quickly, offering a wide range of high and low temperatures, and creating indirect heat. It’s less likely than many other models to flare up. Notable features include recessed folding shelves and burners with a long warranty. (They’re the parts that are replaced the most.) An unimpressive rating for convenience is one of its few blemishes.
Sunscreens
Sunscreen is absolutely essential when it comes to protecting your skin all year, but it’s especially important in the summer months, when the days are longer and clothing is lighter. The good news is that there tend to be small discounts on sunscreen throughout the summer months.
When choosing the best sunscreen, it’s important to consider more than just the sun protection factor (SPF), which measures how well a product will protect you from sunburn and ultraviolet B rays that can increase the risk of skin cancer. You also want to guard against ultraviolet A rays, which tan and age skin as well as contribute to skin cancer.
Consumer Reports’ rigorous testing has found several options that effectively do well against both UVA and UVB rays, have an SPF of at least 30, and are water-resistant for 40 to 80 minutes. Take a look at which sunscreens we recommend before you start shopping.
This Eucerin Advanced Hydration SPF 50 spray is a solid performer with broad-spectrum protection. Its tested SPF comes close to its labeled SPF 50. Like the sunscreen above, it also has that plastic fragrance-free aroma, and it left a slightly draggy film on testers’ skin.
This Neutrogena spray is very good in overall performance across the board, with excellent UVA protection and very good protection from sunburn-producing rays. It does not meet its labeled SPF 50 in CR’s tests, but the protection is still adequate. It has a moderately strong tropical, fruity aroma and leaves a slightly greasy film and a notable sheen on the skin.
Refrigerators
If you need to replace your refrigerator, you might be able to find a good price. Thanks to July Fourth sales on appliances, the first week or so of the month is traditionally the best time to shop for a new fridge.
There are so many types and styles to choose from, whether you want a French-door fridge or a more traditional top-freezer model. You’ll also want to consider the style and features of the ideal refrigerator. Do you want a water dispenser? Is freezer capacity important? Are you short on space? Take a look at CR’s buying guide to get a better sense of which type of fridge is ideal for you.
The LG LHSXS2706S is $50 less than its previous best price. It is a sleek, 36-inch-wide side-by-side with plenty of convenient features, including a through-the-door water/ice dispenser, a built-in water filter, a second icemaker that creates round ice cubes for cocktails (LG calls it Craft Ice), spillproof shelves, and WiFi connectivity to adjust fridge settings from your phone. In our lab tests, it receives excellent scores for thermostat performance and noise output, and very good scores for temperature uniformity, energy efficiency, and ease of use. However, the refrigerator receives a subpar score for icemaker performance and a poor score for crisper drawer performance. LG side-by-sides also receive decent scores for predicted reliability and owner satisfaction in our latest member surveys.
The LG LT18S2100W delivers strong performance all around, and given its price, it’s also a solid bargain—and the price at Lowe’s is the best we’ve ever seen by $20. This refrigerator, 28 inches wide, garners stellar ratings for energy efficiency and thermostat control, and it’s also a great performer when it comes to temperature uniformity and noise output, making it one of the quieter top-freezers we’ve tested. But this model receives our lowest rating for ease of use. In surveys of our members, LG top-freezers got a top-notch rating for predicted reliability and a middling score for owner satisfaction.
The 30-inch-wide Midea MRF18B4AST receives a high score for thermostat performance in our tests, meaning it can hit the desired temperature and hold that temperature consistently. It also runs quietly and efficiently and keeps temperatures consistent, earning very good noise, energy-efficiency, and temperature uniformity ratings. However, it receives subpar scores for ease of use and crisper drawer performance. This model doesn’t come with a lot of features—no icemaker, built-in water filter, or spillproof shelves—but those omissions make this model one of the most budget-friendly French-door models in our ratings.

Washers and Dryers
July Fourth is typically an excellent time to find a great deal on a new washer and dryer. In general, washing machines and dryers are designed and sold as sets, which means when one goes on sale, the other typically does as well. And they tend to have the same, or very similar, prices. But not all pairs are created equal; in some cases, you may want to avoid buying a matching set. It may be worth mixing and matching to get exactly what you want.
Washers range in price from $500 to $2,500, and there are many types to choose from. You’ll see multitasking machines that allow you to wash two loads at once, all-in-one front-loaders that go straight into dryer mode, pod-dispensing front-loaders, built-in pretreat features, washers with a steam option, and more.
When it comes to choosing the best dryer, you want one that will get your clothing dry efficiently and safely. Dryers that perform well but don’t hold up over time aren’t winners. That’s why it’s important to be aware of the most and least reliable brands.
One of the most budget-friendly top-load agitators in our tests, the LG WT7005CW is $20 less than it was during the last big sale. This eco-friendly Green Choice washer isn’t the gentlest on clothes, but it conserves energy and water. It’s among the quietest models in our tests and causes little to no vibration, meaning it won’t disturb you with rumbling. The cycle time is 70 minutes using the normal-wash, heavy-soil setting. Shorten it by using the normal-soil setting when you can.
The LG WM3400CW is already quite inexpensive even when it’s not discounted, so this is a great deal. Especially given the quality of its performance, it’s a smart buy as well as an environmentally friendly choice. You still get exceptional washing performance along with water and energy efficiency. But this model isn’t particularly gentle on fabric, so you might want to try the delicate cycle for your best threads. This washer’s claimed capacity is 4.5 cubic feet, and its cycle time is 105 minutes.
The top-rated LG DLE3400W is $80 more than its best price. We expect it to perform similarly to the CR-tested LG DLEX3700W (now discontinued). The tested model delivers solid performance across the board, nabbing an ace rating for noise and ratings near the top in our drying and convenience tests. This stackable Energy Star certified machine, with a claimed capacity of 7.4 cubic feet, is equipped with a moisture sensor, an extended tumble, custom programs, and an end-of-cycle signal, offering all these features at a fairly low price.
The high-performing LG Signature DLEX9900S is pricier than other LG electric dryers, but it comes with numerous extras that make laundry day easier. First, its 9-cubic-foot drum (the largest in our ratings) can handle any family-sized load. It features extras like a moisture sensor, a steam option, extended tumble, and WiFi connectivity. But what sets this dryer apart is AI-sensing technology that optimizes drying times, and a TurboSteam cycle that refreshes clothes and combats odors. Aside from its 56-minute cycle time, its de-wrinkle option can tumble clothes for up to 3 hours after the cycle ends. You can also operate the machine remotely via its ThinQ app. One thing it lacks, however, is a duct blockage indicator, so it’s essential to keep close tabs on duct maintenance.

Dishwashers
A dishwasher can make quick work of cleaning up the kitchen, but only if it cleans and dries well. As in June, July tends to be a good time to find deals on these appliances. Depending on what features you need and want, these appliances can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to over $1,000. Some keep things simple with just the essential washing and drying functions, and others have advanced features like WiFi control, third racks, and even zone control.
Start your search by reviewing CR’s buying guide to determine the best dishwasher for your home.
The budget-friendly LG LDFC2423V is still at its Memorial Day price. It gets dinged in our member surveys for its middling reliability and satisfaction scores, but it has a lot going for it, starting with its stellar washing performance. It’s also considerably less expensive than the Bosch models that dominate this category. This model is also fairly quiet when running and has some of the design perks that make life a lot easier, like a soil sensor, an adjustable upper rack, adjustable tines, and a time-remaining display. That said, its drying performance is just okay.
The Whirlpool WDTA50SAKZ dishwasher is already one of the best options under $1,000, and it’s at its lowest price right now. It’s a strong performer, with a third rack and an upscale look for the price, including integrated controls. Whirlpool also earned a very good rating for predicted reliability and a midlevel score for owner satisfaction based on data from our reader surveys. It’s similar to lower-end models from the KitchenAid brand, which is also owned by Whirlpool.
The Bosch 800 Series SHX78CM5N has many of the same features as the company’s Benchmark model, including an adjustable upper rack, a third rack, a stainless steel interior, adjustable tines, a motorized spray arm, and WiFi capability. This model also performs similarly, scoring very well in both our washing and drying tests while being about as quiet as the Benchmark model. What it lacks are the subtle upgrades that give the Benchmark a better ease-of-use score. The front of the dishwasher doesn’t have interior lighting, and there’s no built-in water softener or time-remaining indicator. Its third rack has less room and is less flexible than the Benchmark’s.

Strollers
Price reductions on strollers start in June and continue through July, so whether you’re expecting, shopping for a baby shower gift, or want to upgrade your own kid’s ride, it’s a good time to look around. Strollers can cost $100 to more than $1,000. Styling, lightweight materials, and added features can increase the price, but our tests have found that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a good, safe model.
Buying a stroller requires some research first to ensure that you’re choosing a safe one that’s worth the price. The best place to start is CR’s buying guide, which can help you determine which features are important to help you make a smart decision. Then take a look at the strollers we recommend to find the one that best suits your needs.
At 14 pounds, the Baby Jogger City Tour 2 is a compact and lightweight stroller that’s easy to carry but is still maneuverable, responsive, and safe. It’s a great option for travel. It has easy one-hand folding, and its folded size is extra-small, though it doesn’t stand when folded. One-touch brakes are a plus, though it lacks an adjustable handle.
The Chicco Bravo Trio Travel System is our Value Pick for Travel Systems and includes the top-rated Chicco KeyFit infant car seat. The carrier weighs just 9 pounds, and the child car seat can accommodate infants from 4 to 30 pounds. Paired with the Bravo stroller, you get one set that can see you through different stages with your child, from newborn to preschool age. The stroller features easy harness adjustment, plus a grab bar for your kiddo, along with a large storage basket and a small parent console with a cup holder and a lidded compartment. It also features one-touch brakes and an easy, self-standing fold.
Home Security Cameras
If you want your home to feel safer and more secure (while you’re there or away on vacation), consider installing home security cameras. Rather than paying a company to come in and install a system that they then monitor for you, the DIY route allows you to set up and monitor things all on your own.
July, thanks largely to summer sales is often a great time to find discounts on security cameras—you may not have as many options this year since Prime Day was in June, but there are still some good deals. Since smart security cameras first became available, they’ve only gotten better and more wallet-friendly. There are indoor and outdoor cameras, as well as video doorbells, and they can all be controlled and viewed from your phone or a computer.
Home security cameras can provide peace of mind by letting you see that your kids arrived home safely from school, the dog walker showed up as scheduled, or a package arrived. And companies keep making the cameras smarter through software updates that add new features, such as person detection and facial recognition.
We have found, however, that most of the models we tested don’t always deliver the high-definition video quality their manufacturers promise. And many models require you to pay monthly fees for some of the most important features, such as cloud video storage and monitoring zones (the ability to focus on or, alternatively, ignore motion within a designated area of the camera’s field of view).
With so many types of models and features, it can be hard to know what to look for. Read CR’s home security camera buying guide to narrow down your options and find the best product for your home before you start to look for deals and discounts.
The Eufy Indoor Cam E30 delivers a rich suite of features, including a 4K resolution camera that earns very good scores in our tests. It supports color night vision with an integrated spotlight for improved clarity. Its above-average score for smart features stems from a solid set of AI capabilities, including people, pet, and sound detection, as well as automated panning and tilting motors that allow the E30 to track subjects throughout the scene. You can sound a siren and engage in two-way audio communication. Like most Eufy home security cameras, you can view live footage and store clips using a microSD card for no additional charge, connect it to a Eufy HomeBase S380 hub for storage on a hard drive, or pay for optional cloud storage. It’s compatible with Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, and Google Home.
The TP-Link Tapo C120 is an affordable outdoor security camera that offers impeccable performance for its price. It also offers a ton of features and doesn’t require a subscription to take advantage of them. Those features include activity zones, AI alerts (for people, pets, and vehicles), color night vision, two-way audio, built-in spotlights, and local video storage using up to a 512GB microSD card (not included).
The TP-Link Tapo C225 offers a lot of value for its price. It’s a motorized pan-and-tilt camera with local video storage on a microSD card (not included) and a laundry list of features: person detection, pet detection, sound detection (for crying babies, glass breaking, dogs barking, cats meowing), color night vision, activity zones, motion tracking where the camera moves to follow the subject it’s recording, a privacy mode that covers the camera, a built-in siren, and voice and app control via Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, and Google Home. It even supports Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video system, so you can store footage with end-to-end encryption in iCloud.
Are you still with me? In our tests, this wired TP-Link camera receives high scores for video quality and response time, as well as strong scores for data security and smart features. Its only drawback is its lackluster data privacy, but that’s quite common with security cameras. This camera is on sale for about 25 percent off its usual list price.
The Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight Camera can run off either a rechargeable battery or plug-in power cord, sold separately for $50, which connects to the bottom of the camera and can run up to 25 feet to connect to an outlet. It performs quite well in our lab tests, includes a siren, and offers voice/app control with all four major platforms: Amazon Alexa, Apple Home (with an Arlo Pro Smart Hub, sold separately), Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings. Additional features, such as activity zones, person detection, and cloud video storage, require an Arlo Secure subscription.
This was $40 less during Prime Day, but it’s still a nice discount.
Dehumidifiers
As summer weather heats up, dehumidifiers tend to drop in price. They’re great for drying out the air in your home on muggy days, which can help things feel less damp. Dehumidifiers can also take that heavy feeling out of a basement or laundry room and prevent a few other sticky situations: Humidity levels above 50 percent can breed dust mites, mildew, and mold, triggering allergies or other health problems.
When choosing a dehumidifier, you’ll want to determine what capacity you need for your space. Large-capacity machines can work in smaller spaces, but small- or medium-capacity dehumidifiers may be more efficient. Read CR’s dehumidifier buying guide to learn more about what to look for.
This GE dehumidifier is at a great price right now, especially considering that it is meant for dehumidifying large spaces. It’s super quiet and very energy-efficient, earning strong marks in our tests for those factors.
One downside: this model received low marks for convenience, which means its small tank needs emptying more often than other models.
If you’re looking for a medium-capacity dehumidifier, the GE ADSE35WWT could be a perfect fit, especially at this low price. It’s very quiet and energy-efficient while removing water from the air, and its humidstat accuracy is excellent. You might have to empty the tank a little more often than other top-rated models, and there’s no built-in cord storage, but this is a solid option.
Microwave Ovens
You can find a budget microwave oven for $50, or you can spend upward of $1,000 on a high-end model that gets built in to your kitchen cabinetry. But the important thing is the microwave’s ability to reheat and defrost food, and not all models are created equal in that regard, so it’s a good idea to check out CR’s test results and ratings before you buy a new model.
The type of microwave is also important to consider. Countertop models are the most versatile, and there are built-in and over-the-range options as well. If you don’t currently have one of the latter, this may be something to consider if and when you ever remodel your kitchen, but it will cost more than a countertop microwave.
There are other features to look for, too. Do you want the more common turntable or a sliding tray that may be better for reheating larger dishes? Do you need a rack? What wattage is best? Our buying guide can help you determine the best options for your budget.
The snazzy Café CVM721M2NS5 has a recessed handle and hidden digital controls that run along the bottom. When you tap on the glass touchscreen, the options for time and cooking modes pop into view. In addition to looking good, it cooks well, earning an excellent rating in our heating evenness test. It’s also first-rate at defrosting, and it operates quietly. A sensor prevents you from overheating your food. In our member surveys, Café over-the-range microwaves earned middling scores for predicted reliability and owner satisfaction.
Insect Repellents
As with sunscreen, insect repellent is a must to get through the warmer months. And the good news is that retailers often offer discounts and other seasonal promotional deals on bug repellent. CR’s data analysts have found that prices tend to remain low in July as well, so you don’t need to buy a season’s supply all in one go. Though if you find a great deal this month, there’s no harm in buying extra so that you don’t worry about running out.
With so many brands and types to choose from, buying the right products can feel a little intimidating. Check out our buying guide for insect repellent to get a better idea of what to look for when you shop.
This pump spray from Repel is not only the best deet-free repellent in our ratings but also one of the best-performing of all of our tested repellents. With 30 percent oil of lemon eucalyptus as its active ingredient, it offers excellent protection against mosquitoes and ticks. Plus, CR’s testers found that, unlike many insect repellents, this product tends not to damage fabrics or other materials.
Protecting yourself from the elements is just as important as anything else when it comes to caring for your lawn or garden. “For people who live in areas where black-legged ticks [the ones that cause Lyme disease] are common, it’s super-important to use insect repellent whenever you’re doing yardwork,” says Catherine Roberts, a CR senior health editor who has reported extensively on identifying common tick species and protecting ourselves against them.
This 30 percent deet insect repellent from Off is one of the top-performing aerosol spray options from CR’s tests. It offers excellent protection against mosquitoes and ticks. It does tend to damage fabrics and other materials, however, so apply with care.
Blood Pressure Monitors
High blood pressure, also called hypertension, doesn’t have any obvious symptoms, but it can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, and a number of other serious health problems. And though your doctor checks your blood pressure at every checkup, a single reading might not be giving you the full picture.
If you want to keep a closer eye on your blood pressure, you can get an at-home blood pressure monitor. Consumer Reports has tested 28 models, comparing their readouts with those of a mercury sphygmomanometer (the device that’s considered the gold standard of blood pressure testing) as well as testing ease of use, comfort, and convenience.
Models usually cost between $40 and $100, and they often fall in price this time of year. You can choose between upper-arm and wrist monitors, both of which can have a number of different features, though keep in mind that our tests have found that upper-arm monitors tend to be more accurate than wrist models. Our in-depth blood pressure monitor buying guide is a great place to start your research.
Blood Glucose Meters
Controlling your blood sugar, or blood glucose, level is key to managing diabetes. Accurate test results help people with diabetes adjust their diet, exercise routine, and treatment plan—which might help prevent complications and reduce the risk of seizures, kidney disease, nerve damage, and blindness.
Anyone with diabetes can benefit from testing. Blood glucose monitoring can be important for those taking insulin or other diabetes medications, for people with gestational diabetes (diagnosed during pregnancy), and for people having difficulty controlling their diabetes.
The devices themselves tend to be fairly inexpensive, ranging from $15 to $30 even when they’re not discounted, but don’t forget to factor in the cost of testing strips and replacement lancets. Testing strips range in cost from $18 to $184 per 100 strips. If you’re testing four times a day, that cost adds up to $265 to $2,685 annually. Medicare and some private insurance providers may assist in covering those costs.
We are not currently testing blood glucose monitors, but our buying guide can provide more information to aid you in your research.
Steam Irons
Even if you don’t have a ton of clothes that need pressing after they come out of the dryer, it’s good to have an iron at the ready. Our data has shown that steam irons tend to drop in price this month, so if you need a new iron, this is the perfect time to look.
Steam irons can cost anywhere from $15 to $150. Though cheaper models we’ve tested in the past haven’t performed all that well, you can find decent options for closer to $50 that can compete with more expensive models.
We don’t currently test steam irons, but we have a thorough buying guide you can read to learn more about your options and what to look for when you shop.
