The F-350 is a heavy-duty truck with a 1-ton capacity as opposed to the 1/2 ton of the F-150. The Super Duty line was redesigned for 2005 with new exterior and revised engines. The ride is stiff and bouncy, especially compared to the F-150. Ford's 6.0-liter turbodiesel packs some real punch and is fairly quiet and free of vibration. Stepping into the cabin is more difficult because of the high floor.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

"DEF Pump Failure"

Anonymous, BC (2012 Ford F-350 FX4 6.7-L V8 diesel)

"The diesel exhaust fluid system (tank heater, sensor and pump) required replacement at a cost of nearly $1500.00. I was told by the Ford service manager that this system becomes problematic at about 120,000 miles if the vehicle operates in very cold climate."

Michael E., MN (2012 Ford F-350 Lariat 6.7-L V8 diesel)

"Problems with the DEF system."

Anonymous, TX (2012 Ford F-350 XLT 6.7-L V8 diesel)

Anonymous, AB (2012 Ford F-350 Lariat 6.7-L V8 diesel)

"Temperature sensor overheated causing engine to shut-down while on freeway hauling 5th wheel trailer. Another time water in fuel clogged filters causing engine to shut-down"

Doug J., OH (2012 Ford F-350 FX4 6.7-L V8 diesel)

"Exhaust temperature sensor has gone bad causing an OBD code fault. Required replacement."

John S., CA (2012 Ford F-350 Lariat 6.7-L V8 diesel)

"There was a problem with the heater and volume sensor for DEF. it was in a Sunday and reduces the power of the engine. It would only run about 20 MPH. Had to buy a code reader and reset a couple of time to get home (about a 1000 miles). When I got home took the dealer about 10 days to get it fixed. It was covered, not sure why since warrant was out"

Anonymous, FL (2012 Ford F-350 XLT 6.7-L V8 diesel)

Anonymous, (2012 Ford F-350 Lariat 6.7-L V8 diesel)
Steering wheel vibration

"When the truck was about 4 years old, as soon as I would get on the freeway, the steering wheel and entire front end of the truck felt like all the wheels were gonna fall off. Death wobble is what they told me. First, America's Tire replaced my tires, still did it. Dealership replaced some parts, but the truck did it again. Finally, dealership replaced all front end parts and I replaced the rear shocks and so far all is good. Very frightening. Cost me the price of tires and the shocks."

Anonymous, (2012 Ford F-350 Lariat 6.7-L V8 diesel)
Wheel bearings

"Right Front wheel bearing very noisy, found to be rusted and difficult to remove. Ford dealer replaced bearing and all seals as warranty replacement. Problem was solved,"

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Normal routine brake wear

"I am extremely abusive to my F350. First I only use for Snow Plowing and towing my bucket loader. I push it to the limits over and over. Driving in large fields with very steep hills. Next I am what you would call a snow slammer, rather then a snow plower. What is a snow slammer? I have a 200 foot long very steep driveway. I back up as far as I can get, put the pedal to the metal and drop my blade. Sending snow many feet away. I tow a 35' trailer with a full size bucket loader down the highway at speed of 70 to 75 MPH. I go off road into fields and swamps. My F350 seldom fails me, and when it does it is normal wear and tear. like brakes and rotors. (I do eat up breaks about every 3 to 5,000 miles. Not fords fault. I am abusive and my F350 loves it.."

Myles B., NH (2012 Ford F-350 XL 6.2-L V8)

"When pulling a 5th wheel trailer the rear brakes wear faster."

Michael E., MN (2012 Ford F-350 Lariat 6.7-L V8 diesel)

"Had to replace all brakes at 130,000 kilometres. Normal wear and tear. Nothing unusual."

Anonymous, NT (2012 Ford F-350 XLT 6.7-L V8 diesel)
Parking brake

"It had rusted so bad that rotors, pads, shoes, basically everything but the caliper needed replacing. For a truck that was only 7 years old and only 70000 miles, I believe that to be a deft either in design or materials for a potential safety item."

Anonymous, IN (2012 Ford F-350 XLT 6.2-L V8)
Regular brake failure

"Brake calipers siezed up causing rotors to heat up t the point where vehicle bevame dangerous to operate. This is the second time this has happened. Happens if you don't drive the vehicle for a couple of weeks."

Aaron B., NH (2012 Ford F-350 XL 6.7-L V8 diesel)
