2015 Hyundai Elantra Reviews, Ratings, Prices - Consumer Reports
This version of the Elantra was a well-rounded competitor with rankings near the top of our small-sedan Ratings. An easy car with which to live, the Hyundai combines nimble handling with comfort and a well-controlled ride. The car also offers a neatly laid out and well-equipped interior. However, the coupe-like stylling dictates a beltline that swoops upward toward the rear. This can impede the view to the rear quarters.

Worse Better
Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

This version of the Elantra was a well-rounded competitor with rankings near the top of our small-sedan Ratings. An easy car with which to live, the Hyundai combines nimble handling with comfort and a well-controlled ride. The car also offers a neatly laid out and well-equipped interior. However, the coupe-like stylling dictates a beltline that swoops upward toward the rear. This can impede the view to the rear quarters. The 148-hp, four-cylinder engine delivers solid performance and very good fuel economy. The cabin is well finished and the rear seat is relatively roomy, though road noise is rather pronounced. While the Elantra coupe is simply a two-door version of the high-scoring sedan, Elantra GT hatchback is noticeably different and scores significantly lower in our ratings.

"Phone was configured by dealer sales person, worked fine for first 2 weeks, now the system just hangs up. Have started to go through manual, but no success so far"

John W., OR (2015 Hyundai Elantra SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Radio

"Dealership performed a recall service on radio that caused the following error on screen Update image with version 56. Brought it back to the dealer and they told me the radio needed to be replaced and was not covered under warranty. I convinced dealer to replace radio for free."

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Hyundai Elantra SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The Sirius/XM features do not function properly. I've not renewed a subscription to the serevice."

"radio would cut off unexpectedly - radio replaced problem eliminated"

Anonymous, NC (2015 Hyundai Elantra SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"My Elantra radio should have been covered under the 5 year 60000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. However the fine print the dealer showed me said the radio was only covered for 3 years or 36000 miles. Hyundai 5 year 60000 mile bumper to bumper warranty is fraudulent and false advertising. Their should be a class action lawsuit against them. A new cheapy OE radio cost $950 from the dealer Never again will I be duped by Hyundai."

Anonymous, SC (2015 Hyundai Elantra SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Speakers

"Sound quality is bad"

Anonymous, IL (2015 Hyundai Elantra Limited 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"The plastic skid plate below the engine just fell off suddenly and was dragging on the ground. It was held on with a single metal screw and some plastic tabs. Cost me over $700 to fix. And then this week the plastic lining of the rear wheel well fell off. Again the cheap plastic tabs broke off. This time it cost me $369. I've been complaining to Hyundai with no luck so far."

Anonymous, (2015 Hyundai Elantra Unsure 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"The paint on the roof along the line where the wind shield meets the roof was cracking and peeling. This happened around 55000 miles (still under bumper-to-bumper warranty). The dealer and the Hyundai factory indicated nothing could be done because the paint is only covered for 36000 miles. I guess that's not bumper-to-bumper. After a month I managed to contact the dealer service manager. He looked at the paint problem and said that should not happen and had it fixed for free. That ls why I will still buy another Hyundai."

Anonymous, MD (2015 Hyundai Elantra SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Very thin later of paint. Paint chipping away in spots and rust staring to form there"

Steven C., IL (2015 Hyundai Elantra Limited 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"cracking and peeling around the rear windows in the curve up towards the roof"

Marcus P., FL (2015 Hyundai Elantra Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Raymond C., NJ (2015 Hyundai Elantra 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"the top coat is peeling off"

Anonymous, TN (2015 Hyundai Elantra SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Calipers

"I have serviced the rear calipers 3 times due to rust build-up on caliper supports that causes the calipers to stick and brakes to drag"

Gilbert D., NB (2015 Hyundai Elantra Sport 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Normal routine brake wear

"I had to replace brakes, which I considered SERIOUS because they were expensive. But, it seems like 94k miles would be normal for the original brakes."

Robert R., CA (2015 Hyundai Elantra)

"required complete brake job including all new rotors, I believe service was due somewhat sooner than 'normal wear and tear' mileage. Parts were expensive"

Anonymous, ON (2015 Hyundai Elantra 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, NY (2015 Hyundai Elantra Limited 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Seat controls - movement

"The plastic piece that surrounds the electronic seat controls on the drivers side has broken twice. Dealer told me it is not a warranty item because it broke because of wear. So I guess the piece is designed to only last one year because that is how often it breaks."

Anonymous, WA (2015 Hyundai Elantra Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Sunroof

"With the sunroof open the deflector vibrated vigorously from 40 km upward. The dealer said it has happened a few times that the springs supporting the defector were too weak or even too strong. It was warrantied very quickly and with a smile"

Anonymous, ON (2015 Hyundai Elantra Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Tailgate, hatch or trunk

"When I get out of car and use remote to lock doors, sometimes it will instead automatically open the trunk. Often I did not notice until I returned to car to find trunk was left open"

Anonymous, CO (2015 Hyundai Elantra)

"During manufacturing an electronic cigarette was left under driver seat carpet which was rattling. Dealer found and fixed the problem"

James K., OH (2015 Hyundai Elantra SE)

Laimonis D., NJ (2015 Hyundai Elantra SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Wind noise

"At highway speeds the air noise around the front doors is very loud"

Anonymous, SC (2015 Hyundai Elantra Limited)

"Car is very noisy due to cheap low tires, 1 of which blew without provocation within 1st 346 miles, the other, on a mild bump at 3000 miles, both at speeds <50mph"

Anonymous, PA (2015 Hyundai Elantra Limited 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Interior lights

"This vehicle was purchased used in Dec 2019. Since I test drove in daylight, I did not think to check the interior lights. Later after purchase, I discovered that the interior lights will not turn on when the doors are open, and the switch on the ceiling to control these lights does not function. Fortunately the individual side light switches still work."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Hyundai Elantra SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Engine computer

"Engine crankshaft sensor/timing belt sensor went bad. Had to completely tear apart the engine to replace a $59 part for the total cost of $900. Had they replace timing belt too. Inexcusable repair under 50k miles and not covered by warranty!"

Anonymous, AZ (2015 Hyundai Elantra SE Unsure)
Engine knock or ping

"Getting severe (in my opinion) rattle in the lifter valve train especially during cold starts. Dealer says they don't hear anything after having the car for three days."

Steven B., NE (2015 Hyundai Elantra Limited 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Noticing everyone engine ping in the last 12 months. Does not appear to effect engine performance."

Anonymous, AZ (2015 Hyundai Elantra SE Unsure)

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Engine rebuild or replacement

"I noticed my Elantra started ticking while accelerating and idling so I brought it in for an oil change and mentioned the noise. The repair tech informed me that they found metal shards in the oil pan and my engine would need to be replaced. The repair was done under warranty but the engine parts were on a five-week backorder so the repair took over a month. This occurred at the 50,000 mile point."

Anonymous, MN (2015 Hyundai Elantra SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine replaced because cylinder walls were scorched. Pistons and rings were shot. Main bearings were breaking up, metal found in oil pan."

Anonymous, NY (2015 Hyundai Elantra Limited 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"right about when the engine warranty expired the dealership noticed metal flakes in the oil so I had to pay to get the engine replaced. when doing research on this other owners were complaining of engine issues but Hyundai did not look into the matter. I still think there is a flaw in those engines and that customers should be reimbursed for the cost and there should be a recall."

Anonymous, IN (2015 Hyundai Elantra SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Timing belt or chain

"CAR WOULD START BUT WOULD SHUT RIGHT DOWN"

Gary P., NY (2015 Hyundai Elantra SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"3 years ago the fans would not come on when I turned on the A/C in the summer or when I turned the heat in winter. The problem was intermittant and the dealer kept claiming they could not "dupliate" the problem. I had the same issue a year ago."

Anonymous, (2015 Hyundai Elantra SE Unsure)

"The A/C compressor seized up and froze in the Summer of 2019. It is driven by the single / main belt, so the belt kept spinning along with the engine and eventually snapped. Thus, the engine-cooling water pump could not work, so the car could not be driven until both the A/C compressor and belt were replaced. I bought the part from RockAuto.com, the belt and refrigerant from a local auto parts store, and self-installed it with a friend who works on cars a lot within 2-3 days. The new one makes a whirring sound I don't remember, but it has operated without incident since."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Hyundai Elantra Unsure Unsure)
Automatic climate control

"Windows fog up"

Anonymous, ON (2015 Hyundai Elantra)

"It would blow hot air out one side of the car and cold air out the other side of the car when the temp and blower controls were set the same for each side. They had to completely replace the Climate system."

Anonymous, GA (2015 Hyundai Elantra)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Shocks or struts

"The problem started from the time that I purchased it. I was told that Hyundai's have always been this way. I've learned to live with it."

Anonymous, NC (2015 Hyundai Elantra SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The shocks are too stiff. When I drive over a divet in the pavement or a sunken manhole cover I feel a jolt. I don't get a very gratifying ride. My ride isn't cushioned. The suspension loses it's composure when I drive over a hole"

Anonymous, NC (2015 Hyundai Elantra SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Tire wear is uneven

"Rear tires wear faster than front-no provision to change settings that could be better. Also, you have no place to check off problems with electric steering, which has been a major concern with this car. Hyundai has done a very poor job of addressing a "lack of assist at times" problem- they try to BS their way and claim it is normal. No more Hyundai for me."

Anonymous, NB (2015 Hyundai Elantra Sport 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"right rear tire has abnormal wear- no adjustment on rear axle"

Gilbert D., NB (2015 Hyundai Elantra Sport 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"With its six speed manual transmission it is extremely difficult to find the sweat spot when shifting from one gear to another. I should have bought a car with an automatic transmission."

Anonymous, OR (2015 Hyundai Elantra 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Car jerks when you slow down to a stop at stop signs or red lights when engine and transmission are cold. Dealer could not find anything wrong with it. Still jerking when cold. Will take back to dealer"

Marcus P., FL (2015 Hyundai Elantra Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Power Equipment
