Of the major Japanese brands, Nissan has had the most inconsistent product line. The better models deliver strong performance along with impressive fuel economy, through widespread use of continuously variable transmissions. While these CVTs optimize efficiency, they tend to sap driving enjoyment. Once strong, reliability is now average, with the Sentra performing particularly poorly. Fresher models such as the Maxima sedans, the Versa Note subcompact, and the Murano, Rogue, and Rogue Sport SUVs are competitive in their respective classes, but the small Versa and Sentra, and Pathfinder SUV have not done well in our tests. Nissan has expanded the availability of automatic emergency braking, making it standard on several more models for 2018.
