Amazon Fire HD 8 2017 (16GB)

    Amazon Fire HD 8 2017 (16GB)

This Amazon product covers the basics well: reading news and books, watching movies, and playing simple games. Its 15-hour battery life is better than average. While not at the top of CR’s tablet ratings, it’s a great deal, selling for about one-half the cost of most competitors. It comes with Alexa, the voice-responding virtual assistant.

      Blood Pressure Monitor
      Omron 10 Series BP786N
      Omron 10 Series BP786N

        Omron 10 Series BP786N

This device has a molded stiff cuff that is shaped to fit most arms (9 -17 inches). We found that the molded cuff may be easier to position on the arm than softer cuffs but it may be difficult for some users to initially open up the cuff and place on their arm. The bright backlit display digits are large and easy to read. First time set up is not difficult and the incremental buttons go in the positive and negative direction for date and time setup. The device has separate multi-colored indicator lights for the systolic and diastolic readings to indicate if they are in the normal or hypertensive ranges. If your expected systolic pressure exceeds 210 mmHg, you must press and hold the start button until a number 30 to 40 mmHg higher than the expected pressure appears. A movement error symbol appears on the screen if you move during a measurement. This monitor has averaging mode technology where 3 separate measurements can be automatically taken in succession after which the result is calculated and displayed as a single, average measurement. You can sync the monitor readings to your smart device via Bluetooth and the Omron Wellness app. Once the devices are paired, readings transfer easily and allow you to view them on a graph in daily, weekly, monthly or yearly format. The app also allows you to filter results by date and share them via email.

        Dyson V8 Absolute

          Dyson V8 Absolute

One of the most expensive stick vacuums but also one of the best CR ever tested. It receives top marks for carpet, edge cleaning, noise, and pet hair; quickly converts to a hand vac; does a good job controlling the release of fine dust particles; and easily empties in one step.

          Blu-Ray Player
          Sony UBP-X700
          Sony UBP-X700

            Sony UBP-X700

This 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player from Sony, an entry-level model from the company, doesn't have all the features of the step-up UBP-X800 model, also in our ratings, but it delivers on the basics, including excellent 4K picture quality and UHD performance. Among the lowest-priced 4K players in our ratings, this model has a very compact design, and it has two HDMI outputs, which can be useful if your receiver can't pass through 4K video signals, as you can run one HDMI for audio and then connect the other HDMI output directly to the 4K TV or projector. Right now its supports the HDR10 HDR format, but later this year it will add Dolby Vision support via a firmware update. The player also supports high-resolution audio, as well as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X immersive sound formats. It offers access to several online streaming video services, but lacks the Bluetooth capability—which lets you send music wirelessly to a set of Bluetooth headphones or speakers—found in the pricier UBP0X800 model.

CR's tests found that this 12-cup drip coffee maker has a well-designed carafe, as well as impressive brewing and easy operation. And setup, operation, and cleanup are convenient and intuitive. Among its other attractions are a washable, cone-type filter basket; a water filter; and an indicator that tells you it's time to clean the machine.

The device will track your calories burned and sleep patterns, while also letting you know when you have a new text, email, or other notification. Rite Aid Deluxe Automatic...

This device has a flexible, nylon cuff that fits most arms (8.7 - 16.5 inches). It may be difficult for some users to wrap the cuff around their own arm and align the artery marker. Although the cuff is not molded, the nylon is stiff. The velcro bond is strong and sometimes difficult to pull apart. The size of the numbers on the display are large and easy to read. First time set up is not difficult, although the incremental buttons for the time and date only advance in the positive direction. This monitor has averaging mode technology where 3 separate measurements can be automatically taken in succession after which the result is calculated and displayed as a single, average measurement.

                    Keurig K-Elite K90
                    Keurig K-Elite K90

                      Keurig K-Elite K90

This highly rated single-serve model from Keurig scores Very Good for repeat speed and temperature consistency, so it has what it takes to serve a crowd. It uses K-Cup pods, and with its programmability and removable reservoir, it’s especially easy to clean and operate. Note that Keurig single-serve coffee makers score only Fair for reliability on CR’s surveys, a fact worth considering if you hope to keep this machine around for a while.

                      Air Mattress
                      Aerobed Classic Inflatable
                      Aerobed Classic Inflatable

                        Aerobed Classic Inflatable

This 11-inch-high air mattress from Aerobed is on the pricier side, but it might be worth the investment: Thanks to the included electric accessory pump, it takes just 2 minutes to inflate and 2 minutes to deflate this air mattress. In our deflection test, it earns an Excellent rating, meaning it won’t sag as much when you sit on it. It sank approximately 4 inches. As for storage, it was a little on the bulkier side, particularly for a single-height model—it requires 12x12x22 inches of storage space.

                        Sennheiser HD 4.50 BTNC

                          Sennheiser HD 4.50 BTNC

This wireless Bluetooth model from Sennheiser delivers excellent active noise reduction and very good sound quality, and is a decent choice for the more critical listener for both music and movie soundtrack playback. These headphones have a closed design; they will provide some muffling and electronic canceling of external noises and also reduce the amount of sound that escapes from the headphones. As such, they are best for those who want to reduce the amount of noise they hear from their surroundings, or don't want the sound from the headphones to disturb others, and who are comfortable with the size of a home/studio style model.

                          Omron 7 Series UltraSilent BP652N

                            Omron 7 Series UltraSilent BP652N

This device has a soft flexible cuff that fits most wrists (5.25 - 8.5 inches). The display digits are not as large as some of the other wrist monitors but they are not difficult to read. First time set up is not difficult although the incremental buttons for the time and date only advance in the positive direction. The monitor will take a measurement even if the positioning indicator is not in the correct position, but the results will show if the position was correct during the measurement. A movement error symbol apprears on screen if you move during the measurement. The unit is extremely quiet.

                            TV
                            TCL 43S517
                            TCL 43S517

                              TCL 43S517

This 43-inch 4K UHD smart TV from TCL, a new Roku TV series for the company in 2018, delivers excellent high-definition picture quality and very good UHD performance. Its HDR performance, though, had very limited effectiveness, mainly due to a lack of peak brightness. (This set supports both HDR10 and Dolby Vision HDR.) However, to get the best performance from this set you need to shut off noise reduction, a setting that's available only on the Roku app, not the TV itself. Also the TV has a fairly narrow viewing angle, and only fair sound. Thanks to the built-in Roku smart TV platform, this model has access to a lot of content, and it includes Roku's My Feed feature, which lets you follow new movie releases and upcoming TV shows and receive notifications when they become available on a streaming service. The TV has three HDMI inputs, and one USB port.

                              Blu-Ray Player

                              Sony BDP-S3700

                                Sony BDP-S3700

This Blu-ray player from Sony, the model just below the BDP-S6700 player also in our Ratings, delivers excellent picture quality, as do all the models in our Ratings. Compared to its pricier sibling, it lacks a few features, such as 4K upscaling and two-way Bluetooth. It does include screen mirroring, so you can display content from a compatible tablet, computer, or smartphone on your TV screen. And it, too, is an Internet-capable model with built-in WiFi for connecting to a home network, convenient if you don't have a nearby Ethernet jack. The player has access to online content from several services. (See Streaming Services, below, for a list of the most popular services available). This model lacks a display on the unit.

                                ZVOX SoundBase 570

                                  ZVOX SoundBase 570

This two-channel sound base from ZVOX, a company that essentially created the category more than a decade ago, delivers good overall sound quality which casual listeners may find works well for music and movie playback. The enclosure is solidly built, and can support TVs weighing up to 110 lbs. This model has a good number of connections--three digital audio inputs (two optical, one coaxial) and three analog inputs—plus Bluetooth for wirelessly playing music from portable devices. It comes with a credit-card-sized remote.

                                  Smart Speaker
                                  JBL Link View
                                  JBL Link View

                                    JBL Link View

If you think the JBL LINK View looks like a tablet with a speaker, rather than a speaker with a screen, that's understandable—after all, the design puts the screen front and center.

But despite its 8-inch HD touchscreen and 5 MP front-facing camera, the LINK View is a speaker first and foremost. It incorporates two 10-watt forward-facing drivers and a rear-facing passive radiator meant to produce greater bass impact, as well as the abillity to stream 24-bit high-definition audio tracks.

Like the Lenovo speaker shown above, the LINK View JBL works with Google Assistant. The screen can supplement the digital assistant's voice responses by, say, popping up a recipe, YouTube video, or map showing you the traffic on your route to the office.

Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II

Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II

This Canon is one of CR's top-rated and best values in the advanced point-and-shoot camera category. Testers were especially impressed by the image quality, which garnered an Excellent rating. A wider-than-average 24mm perspective comes in handy for group shots and landscape shooting—and it also zooms, to 120mm. External manual controls make it a good choice for buyers who want to sharpen photography skills.
