Brakes
Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.
What Owners Say
"Brakes started chattering and stopping became a challange. Had to pump the brakes at times to stop. Finally removed the fuse to disable them"
Michael K., MN (2000 Ford F-150 XLT 4.6-L V8)"ABS light stays on; no code readout possible"
Anonymous, GA (2000 Ford F-150 Lariat 4.6-L V8)"ABS warning light was on when I purchased the truck used. Took it to my mechanic who diagnosed that the computer control module for ABS was dead and that it could not be affordably replaced, if you could even find a replacement module for a Ford truck that old, You can't. So no ABS."
Michael C., IN (2000 Ford F-150)"Last spring, in town, I hit the brakes & the pedal went almost to the floor before responding weakly. Stopping distance was ten times normal. With almost no brakes, I managed to work my way out of town & refill my almsot empty gas tank. Drove 50 miles over country roads (50mph) to my mechanic. He was closed and my brakes were working. The next day he said it's the ABS control unit but I cann't find a new replacement anywhere. Ford stopped making them. If your truck had rear disk brakes instead rear drum brakes I could get one. I have had bad experiences with reconditioned used brake control units, I wouldn't put one in my truck or in yours. For a year I've driven like I was drving on ice & have had no brake problems. I can't predict when or if the brakes will fail again, therefore I am morally and leagally resonsible for the consequences if I sell it. I have to raise the money before I can replace it. I will be able to replace it someday, mean while, I am carefull. My mechanic says he may be able to get a trustworthy used part. Maybe I'll try that; it won't be cheap."
Anonymous, TX (2000 Ford F-150 Unsure 4.2-L V6)"ABS pump tended to get stuck on and would drain battery. Rather than repair (estimated cost of nearly $2000), it was easier to pull the fuse on the pump since we no longer tow or drive the truck in conditions were ABS would be a big benefit."
Anonymous, WA (2000 Ford F-150 Lariat 4.6-L V8)"The calipers would not release"
James M., KY (2000 Ford F-150 XLT 4.2-L V6)"The right front caliper doesn't release all the way, causing the pads to overheat and chatter after a few miles."
Anonymous, WV (2000 Ford F-150)"They frooze up causing the rotors to basically melt and nearly start on fire and causing an emergency situation and an expensive rebuild of the system"
Brian Y., TX (2000 Ford F-150 XL 4.2-L V6)"Braking system grabs"
Anonymous, WA (2000 Ford F-150)"Front brake pads were less than 2 millimetres thick and needed replacement."
Anonymous, CA (2000 Ford F-150 XLT 4.6-L V8)"Replaced wore out brake pads"
Anonymous, IN (2000 Ford F-150 XLT 4.2-L V6)"As with any vehicle, the brake shoes wore down and needed replaced"
Anonymous, WV (2000 Ford F-150 XL 5.4-L V8 supercharged)"Nothing special here, for all I know this is the original set of pads and rotors."
Donald M., TN (2000 Ford F-150 XLT 4.6-L V8)"Dealership service department can't fix as a needed part is no longer available from Ford"
Anonymous, (2000 Ford F-150 XLT 4.6-L V8)"Parking brake remained locked most of the time. Could hear like moaning sound when firs starting to move. On wet days when first starting off it would about jerk you through the windshield. Mechanic found very uneven wear on the brake pads which he said he has not seen before. He had no explanation for the cause."
Anonymous, NC (2000 Ford F-150 4.2-L V6)"using the parking brake, essentially has no effect on keeping the vehicle in place while parked. When on a hill, the only thing keeping it in place is having the transmission set on PARK."
Donald M., TN (2000 Ford F-150 XLT 4.6-L V8)"Needed to replace brakes after 24000 miles"
Thomas F., WI (2000 Ford F-150 XLT 4.2-L V6)"Weak rotors warp when replacing tires due to use of impact wrenches in the installation."
William C., NC (2000 Ford F-150 4.2-L V6)"Don't use the truck except for large item pickup/delivery and recycling so it sits for a month or so before the next use. It's getting older and needs TLC"
Anonymous, WA (2000 Ford F-150 XL Unsure)"Replaced pads and rotors under normal wear"
Anonymous, MD (2000 Ford F-150 Lariat 4.6-L V8)"Because of age, brake system had to be replaced"
Richard C., VA (2000 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.4-L V8 supercharged)"When replacing tires the mechanics use impact wrenches thus warping the rotors and causing the truck to shake when braking. I have had three Ford products all with the same issues: weak rotors."
William C., NC (2000 Ford F-150 4.2-L V6)"Rotors on all Ford products I have owned (5 total) have such weak rotors that when new tires are installed using impact wrenches they warp the rotors. The vehicle then shakes when coming to a stop."

"ABS light was on. I had changed the rear sensor on the differential since it was the easiest to access. The light was still on. Eventually, I bought an ABS code reader and it said the rear sensor was faulted. I pulled it out again and found the unit cracked. I replaced it and it has been fine since"
