The F-150 SuperCrew has a large and versatile cab, but feels ungainly and uncomfortable compared with newer trucks. The powertrain performs well, although it isn't as smooth and quiet as some competing models, such as the Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it got a poor in the IIHS offset crash-test result.

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"Leaking from back window trim when it rains"

Anonymous, OK (2001 Ford F-150 Unsure Unsure)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Please keep in mind my truck is 19 years old. In the about the last two years I noticed that the roof top and the hood became badly faded but I had the whole vehicle painted and it looks "like new." I would not put this problem in a "complaint or problem" category. My vehicle is parked outside in the elements in the hot Texas weather year-round, so its fading may be due more to "normal aging" of the paint. On the bright side, the fading paint did not rust through the body or even the primer so it was very inexpensive to resolve the issue. I am perfectly happy and satisfied with my 2001 King Ranch F150 and still going great at 189,000 miles. All of its original features are still functioning (AC/H, mirrors, seat warmers, lighting system, radio, etc.) and no major transmission, drive train or engine repairs. I have replaced the ball-joints and idler arm. The one feature that stopped working about 4-5 years ago was the brake pedal height adjuster. That was a useful feature for my wife but I don't miss it."

Anonymous, TX (2001 Ford F-150 King Ranch 4.5-L V8)

"Paint on roof, hood is chalky"

Anonymous, (2001 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.4-L V8)

"The paint is peeling on the hood, the top of the cab and on the exterior of the bed. It started about 6 months after i bought the car, when it was 7 years old. It has not been resolved"

Anonymous, (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)

"Old vehicle. sits out in the elements."

Bob P., CA (2001 Ford F-150 XL 4.5-L V8)

"Paint faded and is peeling on hood and roof"

Walter G., CA (2001 Ford F-150 XL 4.2-L V6)

"Starting 36 months after manufacture, the paint on the roof started peeling. After fighting with Ford headquarters for several months, they agreed to repaint. Since then, the roof, hood and both doors cracked and peeled. I had it repainted last year. Yes, it's an old truck, but well-kept. The paint was never applied properly to begin with."

Anonymous, UT (2001 Ford F-150 XL 4.2-L V6)

"The exterior paint finish may be caused by age and exposure."

Linton D., NY (2001 Ford F-150 XL 5.4-L V8)

"the. hood had to painted twice, plus the rims, all four of them. wheels just painted once."

Mauro E., TX (2001 Ford F-150 XL 4.2-L V6)

"Unfortunately, I did not keep the wax up and the roof and hood has started to oxidize badly from the AZ sun. I do not keep the truck garaged."

David B., AZ (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 4.5-L V8)
Rust

"It started a few years ago on the drivers side door. Almost rusted a whole at the bottom. Haven't really fixed the problem yet."

Anonymous, IL (2001 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.4-L V8)

"This truckwas purchased from a family member who bought it new. It started rusting from day 1 and is so bad it's not safe to be on the road."

Anonymous, MA (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 4.5-L V8)

"Both stepping rails have rusted off and there is considerable rust on lower frame below driver and passenger areas. Also I had to replace truck box due to rust - it fell apart..."

Ken H., MN (2001 Ford F-150 XL 5.4-L V8)

"doors and side panels are rusting from the inside out."

Anonymous, OH (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 4.2-L V6)

"The F150 has had rust issues for the past eight years. I am sure of the rust is caused by road salt and salt in the air. I have always felt that rust in the truck bed and the rocker panels is due to poor paint, poor drainage and poor design."

Linton D., NY (2001 Ford F-150 XL 5.4-L V8)

"Rust in the truck bed, rocker panel and under body areas. In"

Linton D., NY (2001 Ford F-150 XL 5.4-L V8)

"Rust in the rocker panels, tailgate and rear wheel well areas. The truck is garage kept and clean. I see the same problem on a lot of Ford trucks"

"Getting old starting to rust"

Anonymous, KS (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 4.5-L V8)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"The seal started leaking and it was less expensive to replace the compressor than remove the front electric clutch and replace the seal then reassemble it and hope the leak was fixed."

Clifford Y., ID (2001 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.4-L V8)

"Compressor had to be replaced. Relatively inexpensive repair"

Richard R., UT (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)

Evaporator

"Core leaked and had to be replaced at about $1200"

David Z., TX (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)
Heater system

"Heater core started leaking. I took it to a service center and they said it was a manifold gasket leak and charged me $1000. When I got it back it still leaked from the same place. I ended up replacing the core myself for $70 but had to drop the dash - lots of work."

Anonymous, AZ (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 4.5-L V8)

"Clogged heater core. Required replacement"

Anonymous, TN (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)

"Heater Core was clogged up and a shop flushed it out and now it works much better, not perfect as I still smell the coolant thru the vents. Expect more issues in the future"

Charles L., OK (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 4.5-L V8)

"Heater core started leaking and to replace it you need to remove the whole dash and drop the steering column. I have the heater core bypassed currently since you don't need heat in AZ summers."

David B., AZ (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 4.5-L V8)
Refrigerant leaks

"Leak in inside coil."

Anonymous, SC (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)

"Freon refill"

Anonymous, LA (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 4.5-L V8)

"In the 13 years I have owned the Ford, the only problem that has regularly popped up have been associated with the a/c system. Of course considering the truck's current age it shouldn't be too surprising that leaks of the refrigerant have taken place"

William G., TX (2001 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.4-L V8)

"Has a slow leak. Have had to add refrigerant yearly. Dealership tried to tell me it was a bad compressor, and wanted to change evaporator, compressor and condenser. Saying there was metal in system, 17 years later it is still working and I only have to add refrigerant. Dealers lie to get work"

Keith L., TN (2001 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.4-L V8)

Spark plugs or wires failure

"plug blown out of socket"

Anonymous, AB (2001 Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson 5.4-L V8)

"connector from harness to coil/spark plug failed - less than $200 to fix. BUT approx $400 to diagnose!"

Anonymous, CA (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 4.5-L V8)

"Rear spark plugs in the small V8 do not thread all the way in to the engine, leaving a number of threads exposed to the elements. Over time these exposed threads deteriorate and eventually fail. When mine did it took out a couple of the individual coils. Limped back into town on 6 cylinders. Was simple repair with the proper tools. My mechanic said was common problem with those engines."

Anonymous, WA (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 4.5-L V8)

"Coil packs and plugs replaced after 250,000 miles - they're supposed to be replaced at 100,000 miles, and some of the colipacks/plugs were the originals, so I have no real complaint. Truck runs just fine again after new coil packs and plugs, but gas mileage is about the same."

Anonymous, CA (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)

"Had plugs and wires replaced due to misfiring when driving"

William J., TX (2001 Ford F-150 XL 4.2-L V6)

"Replaced all 8 coil packs and spark plugs, at least half of which were original and had over 200,000 miles / 17 years of wear. It's actually a mild miracle that they lasted this long. Replacement cost was expensive. Coolant leak at the thermostat housing was repaired at the same time."

Anonymous, CA (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)

"spark plug came out of head"

Anonymous, AK (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)

Dennis G., AZ (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)

"Spark plug blew out"

Anonymous, MA (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 4.5-L V8)

"Hear loud bang, engine began running rough, pulled into independent mechanic shop in a small town in N.E. Washington state, Mechanic heard me drive up to his shop, came out waving hands to shut off engine. Said he knew what was wrong without even opening the hood. He said these fords have a situation that the spark plugs in the rear of engine do not thread all the way so that some threads remain exposed, water eventually deteriorates the plug and it blew and took out some of the electronics to other cylinders leaving us to limp home a 35mph for 60 miles. Was easy fix for my repair shop"

Then most often within several minutes the gauge and light will begin functioning properly. There has been no damage to the engine as a result of this anomaly. I suspect it is either a poor electrical connection or a failing pressure sending unit"

"Leak at manifold and head"

Anonymous, AK (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)
Exhaust manifold

"Bolts from exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold were loose.. Fortunately I found someone to heat them and they were able to tighten them. If they were not able to tighten them with heat or if they broke off, the repair would have been very expensive. You cannot get a drill to them without removing the engine. You also can't remove the engine without pulling off the cab. One of Ford's better ideas. The Triton engine runs great although you will have coil packs go bad occasionally and some of them are impossible to get to. Just about anything that goes wrong with this model will cost you more than the vehicle is worth."

Anonymous, VA (2001 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)

"There is an exhaust leak between the manifold and exhaust pipe. I'm afraid to fix this because if you break the bolt you have to remove the engine to get it out with an easy out. To remove the engine you have to pull off the whole cab. Extremely poor design."

In addition, I had a crack in the plastic intake manifold (not a category represented on this survey) which was very expensive to fix.
