We tested two versions of the Ford F-150 pickup: one with the new 5.0-liter V8 and the other with an EcoBoost turbocharged V6. Performance numbers for the two engines were nearly identical overall, but we liked the V8's sound better than the more high-tech V6's. Both of our trucks got the same fuel economy -- 15 mpg overall, which was then strong for the class.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"ABS failed on icy highway so instead of braking straight, the truck did a 180 degree spin in the middle of the highway; no warning light indicated the ABS was not working"

"Mostly normal brake pad wear. Had the rotors machined cause I waited too long. The rear emergency brake cable had to be replaced as it wasn't holding; this was unexpected."

Anonymous, ME (2012 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"I've had a few Ford vehicles and it seems they always have underpowered brake systems."

Anthony D., NJ (2012 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Front brakes shot after only 45000 miles. During regular oil changes they said no problems with unusual wear. All of a sudden the breaks are shot. Ford designed the break system so it can't be repaired, but must be replaced. A service department dream and a customer nightmare!!"

Anonymous, WI (2012 Ford F-150 STX 5.0-L V8)
Parking brake

"Shortly after I purchased the F-150 in 2015, the parking brake cable apparently stretched causing the pedal to not return completely. This caused the parking brake light to stay on until the pedal was pulled up with my toe. Ford had a service bulletin out and I eventually had it fixed at a Ford dealer."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Ford F-150 XLT 3.7-L V6)

"Could not fully release the parking brake without lifting the pedal with my foot or hand."

Anonymous, ON (2012 Ford F-150 XLT 5.0-L V8)

"Parking brake adjustment was off, brakes were dragging slightly, parking brake light was on."

Anonymous, PA (2012 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)
Premature brake wear

"At less than 30k miles, all 4 rotors, calipers and pads had to be replaced. At 40k miles, it is getting close to needing the pads replaced. I drive the truck very conservatively, and brakes usually last me a long time. Since the truck was new, the brakes would occasionally stick and drag. Usually I could feel it if it was the front brakes. Especially if just one side stuck, it would make the vehicle pull to one side or the steering wheel to wobble. I've had times when driving down the highway and the front brakes stuck and started smoking. This problem goes away on it's own and the mechanics have seen no problems other than all 4 brakes being shot. I've also seen lower than expected gas mileage because of the brakes dragging."

Ethan B., FL (2012 Ford F-150 FX2 5.0-L V8)

"Truck has less than 40000 miles and needed rear brakes."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Ford F-150 XLT 5.0-L V8)

"I have had repeated problems with the brakes having an extremely hard pedal but little breaking force. Repaired twice with a replacement pump under warranty both times. Calipers seem to hang up if you don't clean and lube the sliding areas, dragging pads causing one pad to wear out faster."

Anonymous, OH (2012 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Brake pad were incorrectly installed at dealer - they were installed backwards!"

Anonymous, OH (2012 Ford F-150 FX4 5.0-L V8)

"Rotors and pads on all 4wheels needed replacement at 45000 miles. I think brakes should last longer than that."

Anonymous, MN (2012 Ford F-150 XLT 5.0-L V8)

"At 12000 miles the rear brakes failed completely. Rotors had to be replace along with the pads."

Jack J., OR (2012 Ford F-150 Platinum 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"I think I should get more than 35,000 miles on brakes. Maybe I’m wrong."

Andrew M., CT (2012 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Was caused by the previous discussed problem"

Anonymous, PA (2012 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)
Pulsation or vibration

"Had bad front pads from the factory. Replaced them and problem solved."

Anonymous, NC (2012 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.0-L V8)

"Brakes wear quickly due to the weight of the vehicle. Larger brakes and rotors would remedy this issue."

Anonymous, UT (2012 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor 6.2-L V8)

"During what seemed to be normal wear and tear I experienced a vibrating/pulsating in the break pedal during hard breaking. A brake pad had broken in the front brake caliper."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Ford F-150 XLT 3.7-L V6)

"brake pads wore down too quickly and locked up left wheel"

Anonymous, (2012 Ford F-150 STX 5.0-L V8)

"Rotors warped easily, 3 sets in 42k miles. Put non-Ford on the last time at my own expense, even though covered by extended warranty."

Anonymous, VA (2012 Ford F-150 FX4 5.0-L V8)

"Ford trucks are known for rotors developing a pulsation or vibration after 30,000 miles or so. I replaced the rotors with drilled and slotted rotors at around 35,000 Miles and just replaced the rotors with drilled and slotted rotors and the pads again at 99,000. I consider this normal wear and tear."

James L., TN (2012 Ford F-150 King Ranch 5.0-L V8)

"the rotors were turned under warrentee at 35000 miles and the vibration stopped but started again at 70,000 milers. at 76,000 it is very annoying. I will have to have them turned or replaced."

Charles G., OR (2012 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"when brakes applied they vibrated"

Donald D., MA (2012 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"when brakes applied there was vibration"

Donald D., MA (2012 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"At start-up & in wet weather, brakes growling noise from the brakes. After driving at highway speed, noise will cease."

Ryan R., AZ (2012 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"When initially starting the car must pump the brakes to get them to work. After that they are fine."

Anonymous, RI (2012 Ford F-150 XLT 3.7-L V6)
Rotors

"excessive vibration when braking down steep grades"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Ford F-150 Platinum 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Vibration while braking from freeway speed We tow a travel trailer at times may have affected rotor wear"

John M., CA (2012 Ford F-150 XLT 5.0-L V8)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Coolers and lines

"At 5 yrs. and 120,000 kms. The aluminum transmission cooler lines rusted out and leaked all transmission fluid were they were fastened to body. Warranty did not cover even though the dealership agreed this should not have happened. Result is $800.00 out of my wallet"

Anonymous, ON (2012 Ford F-150 FX4 5.0-L V8)

"Trans lines rusted and leaked after 7 years. I feel this should not happen"

Anonymous, (2012 Ford F-150 XLT 3.7-L V6)
Rough shifting

"Transmission would roughly shift at slow speeds, almost like it was hunting for a gear but could not find one. There was a recall, but that did not seem to resolve the issue."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

Anonymous, IL (2012 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"while driving at 55 mph the vehicle would shift downward unexpectedly then it resume as normal. Received a recall notice. So far the vehicle is running better after the repair."

Anonymous, OR (2012 Ford F-150)

"Rough shifting caused by bad solenoid or shift actuators. Paid for warranty deductable to have just the transmission reprogrammed with different shift data. On the drive home contacted them and said it was worse then when I dropped it off. Brought back and they replaced the shift solenoids or actuators, of which they did not know which ones were needed until they opened up the transmission. How about have them all availible and replace the ones needed. After service was still charged another warranty deductible from ford for the same problem that wasnt fixed on the first visit. All this with Ford Factory TSB about this issue. Know problems still charging customers."

Christopher D., KS (2012 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"banging in to gears"

J S., NJ (2012 Ford F-150 FX2 5.0-L V8)
Slipping transmission

"The transmission seems to be hunting for a gear at slow, nearly coasting speeds, and when one accelerates in this situation, it shifts abruptly."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Slipping transmission occasionally and usually in the mornings after initial start up. Took it to Ford 3 or 4 times, didn't slip, and they told me it was supposed to operate like that. Yeah right."

"While shifting at low speeds, transmission seemed to disengage"

Anonymous, NC (2012 Ford F-150 FX4 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"All the issues I experienced with this vehicle were due to computer issues and updates. I gave the service tech the symptoms and experiences I found/had and they found the main computer for the vehicle was affecting many other areas (shifting, odometer, speedometer, gauges/display, lights, etc.). Almost all these issues were covered under warranty and at little expense to me. I have had few issues with this vehicle and all were covered by service update and/or warranty."

Anonymous, MT (2012 Ford F-150 FX4 3.5-L V6 turbo)

Anonymous, TX (2012 Ford F-150 Lariat 6.2-L V8)

"My automatic transmission would sometimes shift from 1st gear to 3rd gear for no apparent reason. My first visit to the shop, it worked just fine and they could not find anything but several months later it started getting worse and I took it in and they found a broken plug on a sensor cable that allowed water to get in and cause the problem. Even though the warrantee was out, they fixed it for free"

My truck is now to old to have upgrades. You cannot fast forward easily or at all. It is dangerous when you are driving and the software loose its place and you have to pull over to find where you were in the audio book. The speakers drop in and out of stereo. I checked on-line and many other Ford F-150 owners for 2011-1014 trucks had experienced this same issue yet no recall or safety warning was issued by Ford or the government. The fix cost almost $4000 out of my pocket for what is obviously a faulty system. PLEASE LOOK INTO IT!"

Tire wear is uneven

"The tire wear appeared to be excessive especially on the left front even when the tires were always rotated at 5000 miles? Eventually, the vehicle would be difficult to keep in the proper driving lane and that was about the time they told me that the rack and pinion were bad. The cupping started around 30000 miles even with the tires being rotated. The vehicle has the original tires but I will replaced all of them within the next 2 months!"

Wheel bearings

"left front wheel bearing failure, caused vibration at high speeds. Mainly street vehicle odd to have a bearing failure less than 80000 miles"

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"My research on my 2012 F150 EcoBoost says its a design defect in direct injection gas engines where the EGR oil-mist vapor blows on the intake valves, I think mine is cylinder #3, and bakes onto the value causing a bad misfire at highway speeds, as a loud physical Pounding in the engine itself, only in 6 gear at highway speed 70-75 mph under acceleration. If I slowly increase to 70 it runs smooth. but passing or on-ramp acceleration makes it pound. It causes an un-fixable Check Engine Light. Ford can clean the valves for fortune, but it will merely re-occur in time. There is an after-market, non-Ford, solution for $550 but I dont think its worth it, to pay $550 for a vacuum, metal catch can, especially since it was Ford who designed it like this. Now I have to pay to re-engineer their issues. And this causes low fuel mileage because of Check Engine warning. I tried Seafoam cleaner, helps. All else is fine."

Anonymous, WA (2012 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor 6.2-L V8)

"Problem has developed with the fuel level sensor. The three problems I've noted have to do with this. The check engine light goes on when my gas gauge gets to 3/4s full and goes off when I get to 1/4 tank. Local ford dealer wanted to charge me $75 to tell me what the codes were involved, went to local parts store and they told me what the codes where for free."

Arnold L., IL (2012 Ford F-150 FX4 3.5-L V6 turbo)
Fuel pump

"Fuse and wire for fuel pump is undersized according to service report and it causes fuse connection to heat up and also burn out fuse. They had to replace that part of wire harness to larger gauge wire and lagrer amp fuse."

Jim J., CA (2012 Ford F-150 XLT 5.0-L V8)
Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"The check engine light came on and, when decoded, determined that the O2 sensor had gone bad. The vehicle was driven for a few months before finally taking it in for service and getting it fixed."
